Titans: This Is When Jason Todd's Red Hood Origin Will Be Told

Titans' Curran Walters teased the origin of Red Hood in Season 3's upcoming fifth episode.

Walters, who portrays the first live-action adaptation of Jason Todd in the series, spoke with Collider about Red Hood's role this season and the changes in bringing the character to life from Jason's time as the second Robin. "It's two totally different characters, but they do have similarities," the actor said. He revealed that in Episode 5 of the series, fans will see the origin of how Jason went from the Boy Wonder to one of Gotham's biggest outlaws.

There is currently a gap in the story of Jason becoming Red Hood. The first episode of the season saw him going after the Joker, only to be murdered by his hands (Batman returning the favor to the Clown Prince of Crime later on in the episode). However, Jason's body was removed from the morgue, with the character returning as the gun-toting antagonist in the same week as his death within the show's timeline. The next episode will reveal just where Jason has been during and prior to Season 3.

"Episode 5, we get to tell a beautiful story about Jason and everything that happened," Walters said. The Jason Todd fans see in Season 3 is very different from how the character appeared in the first two seasons of the series. The character has gone from a Titan trying to prove he is worthy of being Robin and his spot on the team, to killing one of its members, forcing innocent citizens into criminal activity and taking over the Gotham underworld.

While there have been many nods to Jason's Red Hood origins in the comics, such as his first introduction scene being pulled straight from Batman: Under the Red Hood, much has been changed and shrouded in mystery regarding his new identity. Compared to flying solo as Gotham's latest crime lord and Batman antagonist in the comics, Titans sees Jason having a background in drug manufacturing and a mentor-relationship with Dr. Jonathan Crane, the Scarecrow. Episode 4, "Blackfire," left off with Jason holding his own against Nightwing and escaping into the night with Scarecrow.

"It's pretty intense," Walters said, describing overall how Jason's arc will progress this season. "Obviously, he gets interested with Scarecrow and whatnot. So, yeah. It's a beautiful journey we get to explore. Hopefully, the fans are going to love it. And we get to see so much emotional stuff of Jason this season."

Fans will have to tune in to Episode 5 of Titans to find out more about Jason's Red Hood origins within the series. The episode will release on Aug. 26, 2021. Titans's first two seasons and four episodes of Season 3 are now streaming on HBO Max.
