With Season 2 of What If...? already confirmed, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige provided fans some insight about what to expect going forward with the show. Namely, the second season will incorporate stories from Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"That's the fun thing about having the What If…? series now; we can explore questions just like that," Feige told Screen Rant in a recent interview. "And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you’ve seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4."
Phase 4 presents a wealth of content for the writers and creators of What If...? to explore and reimagine; currently, there are 11 movies and 13 Disney+ series reported to be a part of the MCU's most recent phase. While some of the titles feature MCU fan favorites like Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Wanda Maximoff and the Guardians of the Galaxy, other titles are set to introduce brand new characters like Dominque Thorne's Riri Williams/Ironheart and Simu Liu's Shang-Chi.
Moreover, with the introduction of the Time Variance Authority and Kang in the first season of Loki, examining the consequences of alternate timelines and universes has become a running theme of Phase 4. Most of the upcoming films -- particularly Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania -- will explore multiversal events to some degree. This theme ties in seamlessly with the intent of What If...?, and these films appear to be excellent candidates for reimaginings.
The second season of What If...? will not only focus on remixing stories from Phase 4; it will also build on what the animated series has already established. The show's first season has shown alternative universes that feature Peggy Carter becoming the original Super Soldier and T'Challa becoming Star-Lord, and the trailers and teaser images have revealed everything from zombified versions of the Avengers to an evil Doctor Stange will make appearances at some point. So far, it has been confirmed Captain Carter will feature in Season 2, and more announcements of reoccurring characters will likely happen in the coming months.
The potential for Season 2 of What If...? does not end at incorporating Phase 4 titles and revisiting characters from Season 1. Some fans have speculated What If...? will have a significant impact on the MCU going forward, with Jeffery Wright's Uatu possibly assembling the Guardians of the Multiverse. Furthermore, in another recent interview, Marvel's new head of animation Brad Winderbaum hinted at the possibility of crossovers between the MCU's animated and live-action properties, stating, "There's always the potential."
The first season of What If...? is available on Disney+ with new episodes airing on Wednesdays.
