DC: 10 Superheroes That Are At the Top Of The GRIT Scale | CBR

In psychology, GRIT is defined as a positive trait based on perseverance combined with the passion for a long-term goal.  Angela Duckworth was intrigued about this subject, so she went about studying it. Her results appeared in the 2016 book GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.

To obtain her results, Duckworth created a GRIT Scale. The series of 10 questions ask participants questions on their reactions to setbacks, work ethics, and interests. The answers are scored from one to five, with the latter being the highest mark. The total number of points is divided by 10 to get the final result. The maximum value of five means the participant is one of the GRITtiest individuals around. It's also a score most heroes on this list receive.

10 Batman Has A Maximum Score On The Grit Scale

Batman is a five on the GRIT scale. He's a hero that doesn't get distracted by new ideas. Plus, setbacks don't discourage him. This is a superhero who had his back broken by Bane yet worked incredibly hard to get his Batman mantle back from Azrael.

Another strong GRIT trait Bruce has is the power to finish what he begins. When the bat crashed through the window at Wayne Manor, he knew his responsibility was to rid Gotham City and the world of crime. Despite all the obstacles he regularly encounters, Batman still makes every effort to keep the streets safe.

9 Shazam Scores High Thanks To His Mystical Influences

Both Shazam and his alter ego Billy Batson have high levels of GRIT. The way they achieved them is different. When he isn't the embodiment of mystical beings, Billy gains his perseverance from being an orphan. He had to learn how to live on his own since no one was there to help him.

On the other hand, Shazam ranks at the top of the GRIT scale thanks to Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. They keep him steady in a fight and help him move in the right direction. There are few times when this sextet fails the hero.

8 Wonder Woman Is Strong But Her Interests Change Regularly

Though Wonder Woman is a high scorer on the GRIT scale she doesn't receive the maximum value of five. It's due to the many distractions in her life as a superhero.

For instance, in the 1960s she gave up her powers to live in Man's World when the rest of the Amazons went to another dimension. In the 1990s, instead of fighting for herself, she gave up the role of Wonder Woman to another. Generally, Diana has been distracted by her mother, relationships, and what goes on around her.

7 Despite A High GRIT Score, Nightwing Gets Distracted

Nightwing is another superhero that gets distracted. On top of that, he tends not to finish what he starts. This could be due to past inexperience. An example is when he thought he could be a Bludhaven police officer. That idea quickly came and went when Dick realized he could do more in his Nightwing persona.

There are also moments where setbacks temporarily discourage him. When Donna Troy was killed by a Superman robot, he decided to disband his team of adult Titans and create a new incarnation of the Outsiders. After he got shot in the head, he decided not to resume his role as Nightwing to avoid further issues. Still, his GRIT score is high across the board.

6 Superman Has A Hard Time Completing Goals

Superman is the greatest hero in the DC Universe. He has high GRIT marks when it comes to hard work, diligence, and overcoming setbacks. After all, he returned from the dead after battling Doomsday.

Nevertheless, he has problems completing goals. This isn't entirely his fault. The public as well as groups like the Justice League keep asking him for help. Thus, he has to drop everything to battle a galactic threat. When he's done with that he forgets what he was previously working on.

5 Green Arrow Finishes What He Starts

Oliver Queen doesn't mess around. Though he doesn't have any metahuman powers, his GRIT scale is at maximum. It's due to his tenacity and ability to finish what he starts.

This is connected to his origins. Stranded on an island without resources, Ollie had to remain diligent to find food and shelter. This perseverance continues in his role as Green Arrow. So does his passion to assist those that can't help themselves.

4 The Flash Does Have Interests That Change Year To Year

Barry Allen nearly rates a maximum score on the GRIT scale. However, there is one place where he isn't strong. This involves his interests.

While they don't change yearly right now, there is one time it caused some drastic issues - Flashpoint. This spur-of-the-moment choice not only threw off his GRIT score but transformed the world around it. Additionally, it allowed Dr. Manthattan to further mess with the timeline and usher in the New 52 era of history.

3 For Harley Quinn, Losing Interest In A Certain Idea Is A Good Thing

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Harley Quinn is at the top of the GRIT scale. After all, despite her craziness, she's actually quite smart. Plus, she has overcome several bad moments in her life to become one of DC's most powerful and popular heroines.

The one GRIT item she scores low on is being obsessed with a certain idea but later losing interest. However, this resulted in a positive outcome. She was certainly obsessed with the Joker for a long time. However, seeing nothing but trouble with him, she decided to abandon Mistah J. and do good for others.

2 Jessica Cruz Has Overcome A Good Deal To Become A Green Lantern

Jessica Cruz is not only surrounded by an aura created by her Green Lantern ring. She's also covered with a large amount of GRIT. Here's a superhero that witnessed the death of her friends at the hands of mobsters. She regularly deals with anxiety attacks due to PTSD.

Yet, Jessica doesn't let those issues stop her. She never gives up. Even in the midst of an attack, she keeps pushing, especially when dealing with a villain. If not, she would be easy prey.

1 The Martain Manhunter Is Methodical In His Approaches

J'onn J'onzz displayed GRIT as soon as he arrived on Earth. Quickly handling the death of the man who transported him here, he quickly adapted to the planet's culture. When he became the hero known as the Martian Manhunter, J'onn never gave up on Earth's citizens.

The same goes for his time with various Justice League incarnations. He's a hard worker with a laser focus on present tasks. Unless attacked, he maintains telepathic connections with other heroes in crises. His high GRIT scale score makes J'onn a reliable superhero to many.
