The Owl House: All 10 Covens, Ranked | CBR

The Owl House has quickly developed a dedicated following thanks to strong storytelling and an abundance of inclusivity. Creator Dana Terrace crafted a rich, magical world in just a few episodes, and each new character introduced in Burning Isles makes the story even more compelling.

Part of the rich tapestry of the Owl House is the breakdown of magic users into ten unique Covens. Nine of these have tracks of study in the schools Hexside, Glandus, and St. Epiderm. When ranking these Covens, the power of the members is factored in with the students who pursue those Covens. Because Luz has decided to pursue all tracks, she's not considered when ranking the Covens.

10 Illusion Coven Spells Have No Real Effect

The Illusion Coven and its Hexside track are not well known. The most prominent characters in this field are the students Augustus Porter and Edric and Emira Blight. Although they are very proficient, this doesn't change the drawbacks of illusion spells.

The only member of this Coven to use magic was the Keeper of the Looking Glass Graveyard, but illusions just don't have much effect in battle. They only fool their target for a few moments. Also, illusions have less effect if one knows going in that they're facing a member of the Illusion Coven.

9 Healing Coven Spells Are Primarily Non-Offensive

The Healing Coven serves as the medical profession of the Boiling Isles. This is important, but the Coven just doesn't have many uses in magical combat.

However, that may soon change. Hexside has started allowing students to study combinations of tracks, which will possibly create a young witch or wizard with skills not yet seen. Mixed with skills from the Abominations or Beast Keeping Covens, Healing could turn into something dangerous.

8 Potions Coven Takes Preparation

The Potions track got a lot of air time due to Luz being placed in it at the beginning of her time at Hexside. The Hexside students shown in the Potions track have demonstrated significant power and potential, and have even animated the Owl House.

Barcus is studying Potions, but his combination with the Oracle track greatly strengthens those spells. Boscha's skill is formidable, but she may be limited by her outdated ideas around superiority and class. The Potions Coven may also be limited by relying on the catalyst of potions.

7 Oracle Coven Can Get A Warning From The Future

The Oracle Coven has the power to discern the future, which could prove advantageous in magical combat as well as in general living. Knowing that an attack is coming is crucial in avoiding it.

Barcus demonstrates this by combining potions with Oracle spells. His example could cause more Covens' spells to be incorporated into Oracle spells. It could also prove instrumental in stopping the apparently nefarious plans of Emperor Belos.

6 Plant Coven Has Control Over Powerful Plants

Thanks to one of Luz's friends, Willow Park, the Hexside track for the Plant Coven is very prominent. While Willow was originally in the Abominations track, she and Luz convinced Principal Bump that she was a better fit for Plants. It shows that students aren't necessarily locked into one field of study.

This field of magic is most often used to summon vines from the ground. If caught early, the vines are not very strong. Many times an opponent skilled in summoning Abominations can rip these vines to shreds.

5 Construction Coven Can Build Or Destroy

The Construction Coven makes use of earth magic, so referring to it as "Construction" is a little bit limiting. Of course, the members of this Coven do indeed use their magic for building. These witches are also very skilled in combat.

Glyphs are often used by the Construction Coven to boost their power. Presumably, they draw power from the rocks around them. Nevertheless, as easily as a member of the Construction Coven can build a structure, they can take it down as well.

4 Beast Keeping Coven Makes Use Of The Varied Fauna On The Boiling Isles

One thing noticeably different in the Boiling Isles is how dangerous the local fauna can be. With so many potentially dangerous creatures, any witch that can control them has an advantage. Witches that master these spells can do even more, as demonstrated by the head of the Coven, Eberwolf.

This Coven, among other things, can use spells to summon beasts to their aid. However, when no creatures are present, the witch can enhance their senses. The great variety of beasts in the Boiling Isles makes the Beast Keeping Coven a force to be reckoned with.

3 Abominations Coven Summons And Controls Strange and Powerful Creatures

The Abominations Coven summons purple amorphous creatures that are slightly humanoid. Abomination magic has been most visibly used in The Owl House. The Abominations are made of a semi-solid matter that skilled users like Darius, Amity, and Alador Blight can use to arm and/or strengthen themselves.

Amity has demonstrated that Abominations don't have to be human-sized, which may be an indicator of her potential power. She summoned a giant Abomination hand, and Abominations can be combined to create a larger Abomination.

2 The Bard Coven Is Surprising Versatile

If there is one Coven well-poised to oppose Emperor Belos, it's the Bard Coven. The only limitation to their magic is the dependency on musical instruments to cast spells. The effects of those spells can be broad, including controlling other witches.

The Bard Coven has a small subgroup called Bards Against the Throne. These Bards oppose Emperor Belos's practice of forcing witches into Covens and binding them with a Coven brand. Hexside's allowance of students learning multiple tracks is something that Belos would not allow. The Bards most likely would support freeing witches of such limitations.

1 Emperor's Coven

The Emperor's Coven is the most powerful group of witches in the Boiling Isles. The members of this Coven are loyal to Emperor Belos and are free to use any magic. This makes them very formidable and the biggest obstacle to any witches opposing the plans of Emperor Belos.

This Coven and its allegiance to the Emperor, despite very obviously nefarious plans, signifies darker things ahead for the series. Only the mysterious nature of these plans serves for fans to believe the best in characters like Hunter, and form fan theories for the direction of the show.
