House of the Dragon will bring viewers back to Westeros for a tale set during the early reign of the Targaryens, and as the title suggests, there will be a lot of dragons.
George R.R. Martin appeared on the podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of and spoke a bit about the HBO series, the first of many planned Game of Thrones spinoffs. While only three dragons ever appeared on the show, all commanded by Daenerys, the members of House Targaryen on the prequel series will have a lot more.
"'I've always thought this was a cool story, it's one I like, so I'm looking forward to seeing it come alive on screen... And of course, I'm looking forward to the dragons! Obviously, I love the dragons," Martin said. "We had three of them in Game of Thrones but now we got like 17 of them. And hopefully, they'll each have their own personalities, they'll be instantly recognizable when you see them, the colors and all of that because the dragons do have personalities in the books, and it'll be great to see that come alive. And the dragon riders. That's all pretty cool."
Martin, who is the co-creator and an executive producer on the series, has written extensively about the history of dragons in his world. Before the time period of Game of Thrones, there were plenty of the beasts under the stewardship of various Targaryens and a few others. Over time, however, they grew more and more diminutive before ultimately going extinct. That all changed when Daenerys used blood magic to resurrect her three eggs and bring dragons back to the world. But the new show, which is set long before those events, will have the opportunity to include even more. As Martin tells it, 17 in total.
The author also discusses how each will have its own personality and color scheme, but they'll also have riders to go along with them. It's clear the production budget for the show will be massive to include so many of the fantastical creatures, but it seems HBO is ready to pull out all the stops for its return to Martin's world.
House of the Dragon will arrive sometime in 2022 on HBO and HBO Max.
