Lil Nas X Reacts to Avengers Fan Theory That He Survived Thanos' Snap

Thanks to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and a new MCU theory, it seems that Lil Nas X survived the Snap -- and the rapper is blown away.

In Reddit's r/marvelstudios, user u/LegendofConner posted a fan theory that Lil Nas X, in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, survived Thanos' Snap thanks to evidence glimpsed in Shang-Chi. Lil Nas X retweeted a screenshot of the theory, responding "Holy shit."

The theory is actually hard to argue with given some very clear evidence. "Idk if somebody's already pointed this out, but since this movie was obviously set in 2023, and the snap happened in 2018, Lil Nas X had to have survived," the Redditor wrote. "Why? Because Shang-Chi and Katie were doing karaoke to "Old Town Road," which came out in 2019, after the Snap. Lil Nas had to have survived to make the song."

"Idk, just thought it was a cool detail. I love adding to the canon of who got snapped and who didn't," the Redditor said.

As mentioned in the theory, Shang-Chi and Katy do, in fact, sing "Old Town Road" at karaoke on their night out before the film's plot really kicks in. The events are clearly set post-Blip, which saw everyone return from the Snap in 2023, five years after the 2018-set Avengers: Infinity War. This is confirmed by several details in the film, including flyers mentioning the Blip, a conversation Shang-Chi and Katy have with their friends, and one of the post-credits scenes.

Then there's what producer Jonathan Schwartz had to say: "I think the idea was that we wanted to orient the audiences so that people know the movie is taking place after Endgame, but we also don’t want to dwell on the events of Endgame too much."

Of course, in the MCU, it's possible that Lil Nas X released his breakout hit a year early or after the Blip, if he was snapped, but it's safe to assume the rapper survived the Snap if his song exists inside the film.

Lil Nas X is clearly a fan of the MCU, as he announced his debut album, Montero, with a Marvel Studios-inspired trailer.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently in theaters. Montero releases Sept. 17.
