The Locke & Key adaptation on Netflix was not only a success for the streaming service, but also for IDW Publishing. After a string of original properties of theirs failed to turn into popular programs, it was good to see the adaptation of the Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez comic book do so well.
Now, the horror series is coming back for some follow-up seasons, and the first of those is only a few months away. Continuing to adapt the comics' story while traveling new avenues, Locke & Key is set to become another horror and Halloween hit for Netflix. Here's what viewers should know about the upcoming new season and when it'll be available to stream.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Updated Sept. 14, 2021, to include the teaser trailer and release date for Locke & Key Season 2
The premise of the series involves the death of Rendell Locke, who's killed by his student Sam Lesser. His wife Nina Locke takes their three children, Tyler, Kinsey and Bode, to Rendell's old home of Keyhouse in Massachusetts in hopes of keeping them safe. The massive mansion is fittingly filled with all manner of magical keys, all of which can be used by the children for a variety of purposes. Also lurking in Keyhouse, however, is an evil demonic entity that wants the keys for itself.
The first season concluded with the seeming defeat of the demon Dodge, as the children recovered most of the house's keys. The plot of Season 2, however, will reveal Dodge to be alive and well and having tricked the children the whole time. The Locke siblings must somehow deal with the fact that Ellie is now stuck in the void beyond the Omega Door while also reeling from Eden's potential possession by Dodge. They'll also be joined by new faces, including Josh Bennett, a teacher with sinister ambitions of his own, and Duncan Locke, a member of the family who joins the fight against Dodge.
Strangely enough, there's still no trailer for the second season of Locke and Key. This may stem from the fact that Season 2 only recently wrapped up its production at the end of April. Given how far off the season is from premiering on Netflix, there's still plenty of time to finalize special effects and generate hype through teasers and trailers.
The series was announced to be receiving a second season all the way back in March 2020, though principal writing for this continuation began before the first season even premiered. As mentioned, there will be multiple new characters this time around both foe and friend. The aforementioned Josh Bennett is played by Brendan Hines, while Aaron Ashmore portrays Duncan Locke. Other new cast members include Maya Misaljevic as Molly and Tara Nicodemo as Mrs. Lafferty.
Netflix released a teaser trailer for Locke & Key Season 2 on Sept. 14, 2021, that not only provided the first footage but also a release date: Oct. 22, 2021. The series was renewed for a third season late last year.
Streaming now on Netflix, Locke & Key Season 1 stars Darby Stanchfield as Nina Locke, Jackson Robert Scott as Bode Locke, Connor Jessup as Tyler Locke, Emilia Jones as Kinsey Locke, Bill Heck as Rendell Locke, Laysla De Oliveira as Dodge, Thomas Mitchell Barnet as Sam Lesser, Griffin Gluck as Gabe and Coby Bird as Rufus Whedon. Season 2 will arrive in October.
