WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #18, on sale now.
As "The Last Annihilation" comes to an end in the pages of Guardians of the Galaxy, so does this version of the Marvel Comics series. The final page in Issue #18 by writer Al Ewing, artist Juan Frigeri, colorist Federico Blee and letterer VC's Cory Petit signals the last story for this iteration of the team... at least for now.
CBR has confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy #18 marks the end of this volume of the series. While there are no more issues solicited through the end of the year, there is always a chance Marvel plans to relaunch the comic at a later date in 2022, possibly with a new creative team.
The conclusion of "The Last Annihilation" featured the expanded roster of the Guardians working alongside Doctor Doom to thwart Dormammu's evil scheme of conquering the cosmos. After possessing Ego the Living Planet, the ruler of the Dark Dimension set out to take control of other planets in the galactic star system. The Guardians of the Galaxy-centered event crossed over with Ewing's S.W.O.R.D. series in the X-Men franchise, while also featuring one-shots for Black Panther/Wakanda and Hulkling/Wiccan.
Ewing teamed with artist Juann Cabal to relaunch Guardians of the Galaxy in January 2020. The series saw the team roster grow in size, with new additions Nova (Richard Rider), Marvel Boy and Hercules. Various story arcs included a showdown with the reborn Olympic gods, Star-Lord's death and resurrection as Master of the Sun, as well as tie-ins to the event series King in Black and Empyre.
Guardians of the Galaxy are also set to star in their own video game from Eidos-Montréal. CBR's hands-on with the upcoming title called it "easily one of the most anticipated games in a month that is, frankly, already stacked."
