Nintendo Fans Begin to Speculate on Upcoming Direct Showcase

With Nintendo surprise announcing a new Direct showcase, fans are currently wondering what games will be in attendance.

The latest Nintendo Direct live stream will run for approximately 40 minutes, focusing "mainly on #NintendoSwitch games launching this winter." While the company has yet to specify what titles will be highlighted, the fact that this event is not titled as a Nindies Showcase has many speculating that high-profile games will be featured. Fans quickly took to social media, discussing theories on the latest Legend of ZeldaSuper Mario and Kirby games.

Given the release window specified in the announcement, it's possible to narrow down some titles that may be highlighted during the event. While Metroid: Dread, Mario Party Superstars and Shin Megami Tensei V are all releasing this fall, there are a few previously announced games to look forward to. Splatoon 3, Project Triangle Strategy and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope are all scheduled to launch in 2022. The same goes for the highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2; many fans are hoping for an official release date and title.

While some believe Pokémon will be in attendance, given that Pokémon Legends: Arceus is launching on Jan. 21, it's unlikely that Nintendo will highlight those delightful pocket monsters. The Pokémon Company traditionally hosts its own events to discuss upcoming games.

While there are a handful of titles expected at the Nintendo Direct, many fans are hoping for games that have not been seen in years. Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4, two projects announced years ago with little in the way of official updates on their development, may be in attendance, although it seems unlikely.

Recent rumors indicate that Nintendo plans on introducing Gameboy and Gameboy Color games to its Nintendo Switch Online program. The subscription services allows members to access a library of classic Nintendo Entertainmnet System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System games. The company has steadily added to the service over the course of three years, leading many to believe this Direct will introduce the catalogs of two handheld gaming titans.

The upcoming Nintendo Direct Showcase will be broadcast on Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. PT, 6 p.m. ET and 12 a.m. CEST. Fans will need to tune in if they want to see their predictions come true... or be proven false.
