Sex Education Season 3 Puts Otis and Maeve in a Long-Distance Relationship

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 3 of Sex Education, now streaming on Netflix.

As Season 3 of Sex Education progresses, Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey) can't help but gravitate toward each other. It continues what previous seasons danced around, despite indicating they were compatible and possibly soulmates. However, the couple gets a happy ending this time around but not without a twist.

Otis has been head over heels for Maeve, running their sex clinic not just to make money and help students but to be close to the rebel. Maeve warmed to him, but Otis' jealousy, inability to hold liquor, plus his love drama with Ola complicated things. Then, just when it seemed like Otis professed his love, Isaac deleted the voicemail so he could move in on Maeve.

All these complications made it hard for their stars to align. However, that changes in Season 3. Otis realizes he needs Maeve when his current girlfriend, Ruby, says she loves him, proceeding to break it off as he can tell his heart's not in it. Maeve, on the other hand, is clearly wrestling with similar issues after forgiving and hooking up with Isaac despite his transgression.

It comes to a head when Otis and Maeve get stranded on a school trip in France. He redeems himself, telling Maeve he's proud of her, and they kiss, finally giving Sex Education fans the moment they've been waiting for since their chemistry became obvious. It's quite passionate, and when they get back home, both are wondering what their romantic future holds.

But as usual, they have things to attend to. Maeve has to break it off with Isaac and deal with her own family issues, while Otis has to be with his pregnant mom, Jean (Gillian Anderson), as she gets ill after labor. Once more, it feels like the show's conspiring to keep them apart as they end up texting each other from the hospital when baby Joy's born. Maeve, though, seems positive about their relationship status, confirming she's not taking up the opportunity to study abroad in America for a few months as she wants to work on her and Otis.

However, her bestie Aimme makes it clear that Maeve's mom giving her money for the opportunity is a sign. She can't let it go to waste, and if Aimee was taking this brief scholastic fellowship for granted because of a boy, Maeve would ream her. As much as Maeve regrets it, Aimee is right. As such, she visits Otis in the finale as he awaits his mom and sister, kissing him and letting him know she has to leave for the airport.

He's happy, knowing she can't pass this chance up. Still, it's bittersweet as he's finally got the girl of his dreams, only for the world to pull her away once more. Maeve says she'll see him in a few months. However, it leaves fans wondering if they'll try long-distance and stay faithful and if they'll be mature and stable enough to go public in a potential fourth season.
