One Piece: 5 Characters Who've Changed The Most (& 5 Who've Changed The Least)

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece follows Luffy's journey to the Final Island in the Grand Line, known as Laugh Tale. On his way, the Straw Hat Pirate captain has amassed some of the best characters as his crewmates onboard the Thousand Sunny, befriended others, and made enemies out of some.

Given that Oda writes his characters with the utmost care, some of these characters are ever-growing in terms of characterization and, at the same time, independent from the main characters of the story, while others are written such that they don't need to change.

10 Changed The Most: Nami Went From Hating Pirates To Becoming One Herself

Nami met Luffy when he reached Orange Town and the two immediately teamed up to stop Buggy the Clown and steal the map of the Grand Line. Although the two formed an alliance, Nami made it clear that she wasn't a pirate and that she hated pirates. After the events of the Arlong Park arc, Nami chose to join the crew and become a pirate herself. This was due to the immense love and care that the Straw Hat Pirates showed for her, and Nami immediately realized that she belonged with them.

9 Didn't Change: Shanks Is The Same Jolly Pirate That He Once Was

The captain of the Red Hair Pirates, Shanks was introduced in the first arc of One Piece, known as Romance Dawn. While staying in Foosha Village for a year, Shanks came across Luffy and ended up giving his arm up for Luffy's sake. Shortly after, he entrusted his beloved Straw Hat to Luffy and put him on the path to becoming a pirate. Shanks hasn't changed since and remains the same person. He's been waiting for Luffy to meet him in the New World as a Great Pirate.

8 Changed The Most: Robin Opened Up To The Straw Hat Pirates

Nico Robin was the last known survivor of West Blue's Ohara and having the ability to read the Poneglyphs meant that she was hunted down by the Government all the time. Over the years, Robin joined several organizations and left them all when the Government came looking. She lived for herself throughout the majority of her life, but after she met the Straw Hat Pirates, things changed.

Robin went from abandoning crews for her gain to giving herself up to protect them. To save the crew, she was even ready to revive the Ancient Weapon Pluton and play a part in the destruction of the world. Most importantly, Robin opened up to the Straw Hat Pirates and finally didn't feel like a burden to anyone.

7 Didn't Change: Garp Has Lived The Life Of A Navy Man Throughout The Series

Luffy's grandfather, Garp, was introduced quite early in the story as a Vice-Admiral of the Navy. He was extremely active during the time of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Garp has always had his own sense of justice which he goes on believing even now.

His role in the current storyline had been very limited, and consequently, Garp has had very little room for growth. Looking at his actions from the East Blue Saga all the way to the New World, it is pretty evident that Garp hasn't changed much.

6 Changed The Most: Usopp Became A Brave Warrior Of The Sea

Usopp joined Luffy after the fall of Captain Kuro in Syrup Village. Although Usopp was quite a coward during his first few appearances in the story, that quickly changed. With time, Usopp became one of the bravest members of the Straw Hat Pirates. In times of adversity, he always steps up, such as when he risked his life just for Luffy's pride or stood up to Admiral Kizaru to protect Zoro. Interestingly enough, Usopp's dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea; something that he's already become ever since his journey began.

5 Didn't Change: Dracule Mihawk Is The World's Strongest Swordsman

Dracule Mihawk was introduced in One Piece's Baratie arc as the World's Strongest Swordsman and the goal that Roronoa Zoro wished to overcome. Mihawk engaged Zoro in combat and quickly defeated him. Ever since then, he's made a few appearances in the story, but his character remains the same. Mihawk waits for Zoro to rise to his level and then ultimately surpass him in combat to take his title of the World's Strongest Swordsman.

4 Changed The Most: Roronoa Zoro Wants To Make Luffy The Pirate King

Zoro was the first member of the Straw Hat Pirates after Luffy and is thus one of the most important characters in the story. Initially, Zoro declared his dream to become the World's Strongest Swordsman above anything else, however, as the story went on, Zoro's focus changed from that to making Luffy the Pirate King.

This was evident from the events of Thriller Bark, where he gave himself up to save Luffy's dream, and later on Kuraigana Island where he bowed down to Mihawk just so he could make Luffy the Pirate King.

3 Didn't Change: Marshall D. Teach Is The Same Villain

Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was introduced in the story during the Drum Island arc, where he laid waste to the kingdom shortly before Luffy arrived. Later, Ace was revealed to be on a hunt for him. Since then, Teach has made a big name for himself and risen to the position of a Yonko, but he remains the same person at heart. Teach has hardly changed: his ideals of undying dreams remain the same, as do his motivations of becoming the Pirate King.

2 Changed The Most: Donquixote Mjosgard Had A Change Of Heart

Donquixote Mjosgard made his debut during the Fishman Island arc of One Piece, specifically in Queen Otohime's flashback. As a Celestial Dragon, Mjosgard was an evil person who treated others as inferior beings and was incredibly entitled. After Otohime saved his life, however, he had a change of heart. To date, he remains one of the very few Celestial Dragons who has a good heart.

1 Didn't Change: Monkey D. Dragon Hasn't Appeared Much In The Story

Monkey D. Dragon is Luffy's father and the leader of the Revolutionary Army. He's an incredibly powerful person who is known to be the World's Worst Criminal. Dragon was introduced to the fans in Logue Town, but his name wasn't revealed until after the Enies Lobby arc. Since then, more information about the Revolutionary Army has been revealed, but Dragon himself has hardly changed. He has the goal of freeing the world from the grips of the Celestial Dragons, and he continues to work towards it for the betterment of those who are still abused.
