Only Murders in the Building: Mabel's Big Secret Gets Revealed

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 1, Episode 4, "The Sting," now available on Hulu.

As much as Hulu's Only Murders in the Building wants us to think the sleuths on the case of Tim Kono's death are altruistic, some have skeletons in their closets that make them too shady for comfort. Oliver (Martin Short), for example, has a seedy past that's now plunging him into financial debt that could have seen him throw in with the dead investment banker. But most of all, it's Selena Gomez's Mabel who has a lot to hide regarding her relationship with the supposed victim. Come the latest episode, Mabel's big secret is finally out and it may doom her team.

Mabel's the one leading the charge as she, Oliver and Charles (Steve Martin) forge a podcast to ascertain why Tim died. They don't believe it's suicide -- they think someone killed him, and given how many enemies he's made in New York's Arconia hotel, it's easy to see why.

However, Mabel's kept it secret how she grew up with Tim, spending summers at the posh upstate hotel with her aunt. She, him and lovers, Zoe and Oscar (the superintendent's son), all pretended to be the Hardy Boys to solve mysteries in various apartments, but it fell apart when Zoe was pushed off the roof at a party, and Tim lied and pinned blame on Oscar.

We have no clue why Mabel's now hiding this connection to Tim and how he eventually cut her off when she kept pressing him about this mistake. If anything, she shouldn't want those demons remaining secret as they could make her a suspect seeing as Tim cut her off, hating on her too. Well, the cat's now out the bag and it's due to Oliver's son, Will. He's been visiting his dad to follow up on the poisoning of Oliver's dog, Winnie, and while he doesn't have the best relationship with a broke Oliver, he's caring and compassionate, checking in as he doesn't want Oliver going over the edge.

But when Will talks about listening to the podcast, he warns them about Mabel being "bad news." It seems he was living there years ago with Oliver as he mentions how Mabel was one of the rebellious teens involved in the murder scandal. It leaves Oliver and Charles shocked as they'll have to confront her. She could incriminate them, especially as she lied to law enforcement about not knowing Tim.

There's a chance they could play a cat-and-mouse game too to string her along, but the thing is, the mysterious tie-dyed hoodie guy from the premiere is on the prowl. He's tracking Mabel after she secretly found clues in a Hardy Boys book regarding a jewelry scheme Tim might have been involved in, so if they leave her to her own devices, rolling solo could place her in possible danger with other shady characters in Tim's life.

More so, the less info they pry from her, the more they'll be at risk, especially as the premiere's flash forward does show Mabel potentially killing this hooded figure. Ultimately, whatever their decision, it doesn't appear it'll end well as months down the line Tina Fey's Cinda Canning is running her own podcast, Only Murderers in the Building, and hints the trio are indeed destined for jail.

See how Mabel's peers react to her dirty laundry in the first four episodes of Only Murders in the Building, now on Hulu, with subsequent episodes available on Tuesdays.
