WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Visions Episode 3, “The Twins” streaming now on Disney+.
As divisive as Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi was, there were some enthralling heart-stopping moments, not just emotionally but from a cinematic perspective as well. The throne room fight between Rey and Kylo is a good example, but the one that really hit home was Admiral Holdo using one of the rebels' flagships, the Raddus, to stop the First Order from destroying Leia and the Resistance. Now, come Star Wars: Visions, that moment just got even more epic thanks to a rogue Sith creation who wants to tempt fate.
In Star Wars: Visions Episode 3, "The Twins," the Empire has created two clones, Am and Karre, who are fitted with Darth Vader-esque suits. They're keys, meant to channel kyber crystal energy into their Star Destroyer, so it can activate its cannon and destroy planets, becoming a sort of Death Star.
However, Karre steals the power source, because he doesn't want to be a pawn, and opts to forge his own destiny instead. That leads to a brutal fight in which he and Am face off over the kyber crystal. Unlike her brother, Am doesn't care to break out of her evil destiny, not even fearing death when Karre, using clairvoyance, shows her that she will die if the process is activated.
After they battle atop the Star Destroyer, she tries to pull the crystal back from him but it blows up. Splitting into two, Karre is tossed away but caught by his droid, R-DUO, on a Sith X-wing. As he sees Am being electrified to charge the blaster, though, he and R-DUO concoct a scheme as he fits the crystal into a lightsaber of his own.
He flips it on and basically makes the lightsaber into a giant blade as they head straight for the Star Destroyer, slicing it down the middle. As they reach Am, the bot activates its hyperdrive and it destroys her charging station and crystal while splitting the giant vessel in two. The cinematography and stunning silence are an homage to when Holdo used her hyperspace drive to ram the Raddus through Kylo Ren's Supremacy, ensuring the rebels' escape.
Sadly, Holdo died in that suicide mission, while Karre ends up alive on what appears to be Tatooine, hoping he can someday find his sister, who's been rescued by her minions. Now, what makes Star Wars: Visions' action sequence pop more is that it expands on what The Last Jedi did. As beautiful as it was, it was pretty quick, with the Raddus cutting through the Supremacy in a blast of hyperspace light. But this episode drags the slicing out as Karre cuts his path to Am, showing the power of his weapon even without the drive.
It's as if he's got a mini-Death Star in his hands, and it builds to that climactic and cathartic moment as his blade of energy clashes with hers. As they both yell, it adds so much angst to the chain of events, reminding viewers of his sorrow and regret over not saving her, and her rage over how he betrayed the cause. As such, when the heroes punch the drive and blast through, it's truly a visceral win that tops off the bombastic sequence with drama, properly expanding what The Last Jedi offered.
To see The Last Jedi's most epic move improved upon, Star Wars: Visions is available to stream now on Disney+.
