Superman Brutally Murders the Joker in Injustice Red-Band Trailer

Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Comics unveiled another look at the animated Injustice film, featuring a little more violence than usual...

The footage shown off in the trailer reveals a darker take on the Injustice storyline that many fans have come to appreciate since the release of Netherealm Studio's game. Throughout the trailer, Superman brutally murders the evil-doers of the DC Universe, including The Joker, Clayface and Solomon Grundy. The film will clearly not shy away from using gore and violence in communicating Superman's descent into madness. The trailer also provides fans with their first look at Batman's rag-tag Insurgency, which aims to overthrow Superman's police state.

While Injustice: Gods Among Us, and the subsequent comic books, offer a much darker, more violent take on the DC Universe, the animated film seems to be taking advantage of the story's more brutal elements.

The original fighting game and inspiration behind the film Injustice: Gods Among Us tells the story of a Superman driven mad with rage and paranoia. After The Joker detonates a nuclear weapon in Metropolis and tricks Kal-El into murdering both Lois Lane and their unborn son, Superman takes over the world in an effort to eliminate all villains and crime. Over the course of multiple years, Superman's regime recruits several notable DC heroes, including Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern.

In an effort to stand against Superman's totalitarian order, Batman opposes the powerful leader, forming an alliance of rebels to dismantle the global dictatorship. Alongside heroes like Black Canary, Catwoman, Green Arrow and Aquaman, the Insurgency works tirelessly to break down Superman's control over the world before the events of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Netherealm Studios, most known for ther hyper-popular Mortal Kombat franchise, released Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013. The game takes place five years into Superman's regime as the Justice League from an alternate universe, transported by Lex Luthor, aids the Insurgency in saving the world.

Following the release of Injustice, fans of DC's animated selection can look forward to Catwoman: Hunted. The anime-styled film features Elizabeth Gillies as Selina Kyle and Stephanie Beatriz as Batwoman will release in early 2022 but little is currently known of the film's plot.

Featuring the vocal talents of Anson Mount (Batman), Laura Bailey (Lois Lane), Justin Hartley (Superman), Janet Varney (Wonder Woman), Gillian Jacobs (Harley Quinn) and Kevin Pollak (The Joker), Injustice will be available for purchase on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray and digital on Oct. 19.
