Death is something that is an inevitable part of life and anime is no different. Although anime is fiction and we all wish our favorite characters would live on forever, that sadly isn't reality. Anime characters aren't invincible and sometimes, they face the same fate as we all do in real life.
Anime characters dying is something that happens in most series and has been done in many ways. Fans have witnessed their favorite characters die due to things such as violent deaths and accidental deaths. However, the one that makes fans weep the most is when their favorite character dies alone without anyone knowing. Spoiler warnings ahead!
10 Naruto Shippuden: Jiraiya Died Alone After Facing Off With A Former Student
In Naruto Shippen Jiraiya's death is definitely one of the saddest in the series. In episode 133, Jiraiya is battling against his former student Pain. Although Jiraiya puts up a good fight it isn't enough to defeat his student and Pain throws Jiraiya into the water. As Jiraiya is slowly sinking to his death surrounded by nothingness he feels that satisfied with the last chapter of his life and expects great things from Naruto.
This death is certainly one of the saddest in the series due to the way Jiraya died alone without being able to see Naruto or any of his friends before he passed.
9 Banana Fish: Ash Lynx Is Suddenly Stabbed And Isn't Able To Go To Japan With Eiji
Banana Fish is a very intense show meant for the mentally strong, however, even the death of Ash will have anyone weeping for days. In the last episode of Banana Fish, Ash receives a beautiful letter from Eiji with a plane ticket to Japan. Ash decides to accept Eiji's invite and runs as fast as he can to the airport, but he suddenly gets stabbed by Lao.
Ash takes this as a sign he shouldn't go and decides to head back to the library to slowly bleed out. This death is definitely one of the saddest since Ash feels he is cursed and decided to die alone instead of going to Japan with Eiji.
8 Anohana: Menma's Friends Didn't Find Out About Her Passing For Days
Anohana is a sad anime series about a group of friends and a girl named Menma who passed away tragically. Fast forward to the future, her ghost has come back with a wish. Although in the series Menma's death is never shown, it is implied that she slipped and fell into a river, ultimately drowning.
Menma's death is a tragic one since she died alone at a very young age without anyone of her friends knowing until days later.
7 Death Note: Light Yagami Died In A Staircase
Light Yagami's demise in Death Note is one that has a lot of meaning. In the last episode of Death Note, after being discovered as Kira, Light gets shot and then he flees in hope of survival. After making it halfway up a staircase Ryuk writes Lights name in the Death Note ultimately killing light with a heart attack.
Lights death halfway on the stairs symbolizes that he didn't make it into Heaven or Hell rather he is stuck in the afterlife all alone.
6 Fullmetal Alchemist: Maes Hughes Dies Alone In A Phonebooth
Maes Hughes's death in Fullmetal Alchemist is definitely one of the saddest. In episode 25 of the original series, Maws Hughes is shot by Envy who is disguised his beloved wife.
In his final moments, Maes Hughes spends it alone on a phonebooth desperately trying to make a phone call for help while he ultimately bleeds out. Maes Hughes's death is already sad as it is but him dying alone makes it worse for fans to watch.
5 Cowboy Bebop: Spike Spiegel Died Without Any Friends At His Side
The death of this charismatic cowboy is something fans will never forget. At the end of Cowboy Bebop, after the final battle Vicious, Spike is left critically wounded. During his last few minutes, Spike makes his way towards a group of enemies, raises his fingers, and utters his final words "Bang!" before finally meeting his demise.
His friends did not witness this event. Although, his death has never been confirmed or denied all the clues lead us to one conclusion... he died.
4 Akame Ga Kill!: Leone Didn't Want Her Friends To Witness Her Death
Leone's death in Akame Ga Kill! is a sad one since she chose to pass away alone. In episode 24, after being shot by Honest Leone fuses with her Teigu to defeat him. After everything is over Leone and Akame (clueless about her injuries) hug as a farewell, then Leone goes into a dark alley and passes away.
The reason Leone chooses to die alone without anyone knowing is because she doesn't want any of her friends to witness her pass away.
3 Scrapped Princess: Fulle Lost His Life Before Seeing Pacifica One Last Time
Fulle's sacrifice in Scrapped Princess is a heroic one that fans will never forget. In episode 18, Fulle decides to sacrifice himself in order for Pacifica to escape the city safely. While protecting her successfully Fulle is severely injured by the multiple arrows he got hit by.
However, determined to see Pacifica again he crawls his way through the rain while reminiscing the good times they had together. Until sadly, Fulle ends up passing away all alone without seeing Pacifica one more time.
2 Danganronpa 3: Ruruka Andou Never Made The Friends She Longed For
In Danganronpa 3 Ruruka Andou's character is a rather intriguing figure. Ruruka is a character that wouldn't hesitate to betray others for her own personal gain however despite this deep down all she really wants is friends.
In episode 11, Ruruka gets brainwashed by a video ultimately making her stuff herself full of candy so much that it kills her. Ruruka's death is gruesome and sad since she passed away all alone without making any friends.

Kinue Crossroad's death in Gundam 00 is definitely a tragic one. Kinue is a journalist who is dedicated to her work no matter how dangerous it got. However, the dedication to her work is what causes her to meet her demise.
One day, Kinue approaches Ali's car in hope of an interview but instead, he tricks her into getting into his car and takes her into an alleyway to kill her. Kinue eventually bleeds out in an alleyway all alone.
