It turns out the only thing that can stop Superman is a supply shortage.
Action Comics writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson confirmed that the next installment of the series will be delayed due to industry-wide supply shortages. "Sad news, Super-fans: I'm told that due to supply issues, Action Comics #1036 has been pushed back to Nov 9th," he tweeted. The issue will begin "The Warworld Saga," a new storyline that sees the Man of Steel teaming up with the Authority to take on Mongul.
As a consolation to fans, Johnson offered up some sneak peeks of what's to come. One such tease showed a man who had been chained up and branded with the House of El house sigil, in a visual reminiscent of Superman's Future State fate. Additionally, the writer showed Chaytil, the oldest living warzoon on Warworld, with a past that Johnson claims "is easily long/bloody enough for his own Black Label series."
This setback for Action Comics comes shortly after writer Todd McFarlane announced similar issues with the launch of Gunslinger Spawn. However, while delays in comics are nothing new, the specific source of these problems is. As a result of COVID-19, many printers are having a hard time keeping up with marquee releases that need to be printed in high quantities. Retailers also recently reported that they had shortages and damages in their Marvel Comics orders, as the House of Ideas adjusted to its new distribution deal with Penguin Random House.
Since the dawn of the Infinite Frontier, Superman has been coming to terms with his responsibilities to the greater DC Universe. He recently began a partnership with the Authority, a superhero team that exists outside of the world's governments. Superman also put the fate of the Earth in the hands of his son, Jon Kent, to better focus on intergalactic threats. In the latest issue of Action Comics, Superman shared a passionate embrace with Lois Lane and then left alongside the Authority to fight Mongul in "The Warworld Saga."
While Superman's adventures in Action Comics experience a temporary hold, fans interested in the franchise can turn their attention to Superman: Son of Kal-El. The book focuses on Superman's son, Jon Kent, and DC will be reprinting the first four issues of the series to meet the unprecedented demand for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, which sees Jon come out as bisexual.
