Doctor Who: Edge of Reality Gives David Tennant's Doctor a New Companion

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Maze Theory's Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, available now.

David Tennant's tenure as the Tenth Doctor ranks as one of the most popular eras of Doctor Who. During the three seasons where the actor was at the helm of the BBC series, he shared the screen with multiple fan-favorite companions: Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and Donna Noble. Each companion had a distinct relationship with the Doctor, and they helped define their respective seasons.

Now, Tennant makes a long-awaited return to the role of the Doctor in Maze Theory's Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, where he shares the screen with Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor. And, as the game comes to a close, fans learn that the Tenth Doctor actually had another companion they previously knew nothing about.

In Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, users play as a regular human who is contacted by the Thirteenth Doctor. After her call for help, the players become the Time Lord's new friend and companion, and they must travel across space and time to locate three Time Crystals. The only problem is that the Doctor herself is trapped at the edge of the universe, so she can't really lend a helping hand. Thankfully, help comes along the way in the form of the players' very own companion, Emer.

Emer is introduced during the search for the first Time Crystal. In the future, players find themselves aboard the SS Lucia Minor, a massive spaceship. It's aboard this ship that users are first contacted by Emer. At first, it's believed that this voice belongs to a human trapped on the ship. However, when we find the source of the voice, it's revealed that Emer is actually the ship's artificial intelligence system. After the ship's crew was killed, Emer gained sentience and adopted a personality of her own. While she is initially willing to sacrifice herself, the player ends up saving Emer's life.

Then, with a bit of help from the Doctor, a neural connection is established between the players' human avatar and Emer. As a result, Emer basically becomes the player's very own companion as they continue to travel through space and time, offering insights and help while searching for the other Time Crystals.

At the end of the game, once the threat of the Reality Virus is undone and the universe is once again safe, players come face-to-face with the Thirteenth Doctor, who reveals that she has uploaded Emer into a synthetic body. She is a unique lifeform, and she is given the chance to live -- and thrive. Since she took such a liking to traveling the universe across both space and time, the Doctor sends Emer to the Tenth Doctor, with whom she will be able to do the same.

Through a holographic message, the Tenth Doctor reveals that he will take Emer with him as he travels the universe and show her all of the wonders of reality. We don't actually see Emer's physical body, but we come to understand that she is now aboard the Tenth Doctor's TARDIS. Therefore, Emer is essentially revealed as the Tenth Doctor's newest companion.

While Tennant's Doctor explored the universe in Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of Doctor Who with Rose, Martha and Donna, it appears he had plenty of other adventures that have yet to be revealed with Emer. The time travel at the heart of Doctor Who means that every iteration of the Doctor could have had plenty of other adventures in-between seasons of the television series and here, we learn that the Tenth Doctor had yet another companion, Emer, who traveled with him before he regenerated into the Eleventh Doctor.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam and coming to Nintendo Switch Oct. 21.
