Final Space: Could KVN Prevent Someone From Going Insane? | CBR

A big part of what made Final Space such a compelling series was the characters. Gary Goodspeed, Avocato, Quinn Ergon, and even Mooncake were interesting, innovative, and a lot of fun. Then there's KVN, whose entire job was to keep Gary from going insane. Except that KVN was the worst being on the Galaxy One, if not the universe. The question is how could someone that terrible be successful in such a role. And what if he wasn't?

When Gary first met Quinn on Earth, his attempts to woo her ended in chaos and destruction. Specifically, he ended up destroying nearly 100 Infinity Guard ships and a small, family-owned Mexican restaurant. It's safe to say that he felt the worst about the Mexican restaurant. The guilt about destroying it lingered for the entire run of his five-year prison sentence aboard the Galaxy One.

Instead of being stuck in a prison on Earth for his crimes, the Infinity Guard sentenced him to stay on the Galaxy One by himself for five years. His job was to repair a variety of satellites, which turned out to be a lot more important than Gary knew. His only companions were the ship's artificial intelligence HUE and the security and maintenance robots known as Sames. And, of course, there was KVN.

Aboard Galaxy One, KVN was assigned the task of being Gary's Deep Space Insanity Avoidance Companion. Essentially, he was given the job of trying to prevent Gary from going crazy while by himself in deep space for five years. The only problem with that was the fact that KVN was the absolute worst. He was a selfish, inconsiderate jerk who made everything about him and basically tormented Gary for his entire sentence.

Even worse, there were apparently thousands of KVNs, each one of them equally insufferable. In Season 3, Episode 2, Gary and Quinn ended up on what was left of Earth after being taken into Final Space. Once they reached the remains of Paris, they met Kevin Van Newton who invented the KVNs as a defense mechanism against the Titans. Finding out they had a weapon against the Titans was a big deal.

This, however, didn't explain why KVN was such a jerk or why the Infinity Guard thought he would help Gary. What makes more sense is that KVN wasn't successful in his mission at all. Given all the insane stuff that happened to Gary over course of three seasons, it's not outside of the realm of possibility that Gary did actually go insane and none of the battles against Invictus and the Titans actually happened.

It's entirely possible that everything that happens in the series from just before Mooncake arrives is in Gary's head. The likelihood of KVN even trying to prevent Gary from going insane, let alone actually being successful at it is incredibly low. Honestly, it's more likely that KVN completely failed at his job and Gary snapped, something that probably made KVN quite happy. He was really bad at his job.
