Halloween Kills’ Ending, Explained | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Halloween Kills, now playing in theaters and available through Peacock.

After four decades of terrifying audiences and seemingly returning after any apparent death, Michael Myers has made his way back to the big screen in Halloween Kills. By the end of the film, Michael is revealed to have more or less ended up as the victor in a series of face-offs against the local townsfolk. This sets up Michael Myers' victory over the town of Haddonfield -- and reveals the handful of survivors who could try to bring the fight back to him in the upcoming finale to the trilogy.

Halloween Kills is the latest film in the long-running Halloween horror franchise, which effectively cut out a majority of the original run of sequels. Instead, the series continued from the original film with 2018's Halloween, which in turn was followed by this movie. Picking up right after the events of the previous film, Michael Myers is revealed to have survived the fiery trap set for him by Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her family -- daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak). Escaping thanks to the unwitting intervention of firefighters on the scene, Michael quickly kills his way through them and resumes his rampage through the small town of Haddonfield.

The townsfolk are rallied by Tommy (Anthony Michael Hall), the now-grown child whom Laurie had protected in the original Halloween, and set out to hunt down Michael. But this only puts more people in his destructive path, leading to numerous more murders. Eventually reaching his home, Michael is lured into a trap by Karen and seemingly beaten to death by the townsfolk. But Laurie and Frank (Will Patton) realize that Michael is far harder to defeat now that he's killed so many, becoming something seemingly beyond human. As they talk about this in the hospital, Michael rises back up and kills his attackers -- including beating Tommy with the bat he'd brought to the fight and murdering Karen with a knife in Halloween Kills' final moments.

It's a major downer for the film to end on, effectively serving as a teaser for the upcoming Halloween Ends, which is set to end the current take on the franchise. Most of Haddonfield has been touched by Michael's rampage by this point, and many of the people who'd have been willing to work together against him have been dispatched one by one. Michael also seems to become increasingly powerful, growing more unstoppable with each kill. It'll be near impossible to stop Michael using conventional means, so the survivors will need to find some new ways to bring down the killer once and for all before he becomes the only thing left alive in the town.

Luckily, Laurie and Frank still have some people they could turn to for help. Although she was injured in their final confrontation, Allyson is still alive as of Halloween Kills' ending. Meanwhile, Lindsey (Kyle Richards) was able to successfully hide from Michael after he killed the rest of her search party, and was last seen being brought to the hospital by Tommy. She'll likely continue to help going forward. Two other prominent possible allies are Sheriff Barker (Omar Dorsey) and his deputy Graham (Brian F. Durkin), who spends most of the film trying (and failing) to control the mob of people who are soon calling for Michael's blood to run in the streets of the town. Thus, there are still some people left to bring the fight to Michael, but it's unsure if they'll have the chance to win and how many could walk away from the fight.

Halloween Kills is currently in theaters and on Peacock.
