How Batwoman Introduces a Classic Batman: The Animated Series Character

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries has discussed Season 3's version of Renee Montoya and how she differs from earlier takes on the character.

“She’s old school, and she’s been around, and she remembers Batman’s Gotham and Gordon’s Gotham,” Dries told TVLine. "She knows that things don’t end well when people get their hands on [the Bat trophies]. [Both Kate and Ryan as] Batwoman have done a great job of keeping the streets relatively safe for the last few years, but Renee sees a storm brewing -- and she is terrified.”

While Mitch Brian, Paul Dini and Bruce Tamm created Renee Montoya for Batman: The Animated Series, she first appeared in Batman #475 in March 1992 before debuting on the show later that year. Victoria Cartagena is playing Batwoman's iteration of the character, having previously portrayed a different version of Renee on FOX's live-action Gotham TV show. Elsewhere, Rosie Perez played yet another take on the queer cop-turned vigilante in 2020's DC Extended Universe movie Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Batwoman's version of Renee is "a former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department. She now runs the 'freaks division,' which hasn’t seen a lot of action... until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary."

Season 3, as Dries alluded to, deals with the aftermath of Batwoman's Season 2 finale, which saw several Batman super-villain trophies scattered into Gotham River where anyone could snatch them. The Mad Hatter (Amitai Marmorstein) and Poison Ivy (Bridget Regan) are now confirmed to appear in Season 3, along with a "new incarnation" of Killer Croc. Said Batman trophies also included Penguin's umbrella and Clayface's mud, leaving the door open for both of those rogues to show up at some point.

Javicia Leslie reprises her role as Ryan Wilder for Batwoman Season 3, with Camrus Johnson (Luke Fox/Batwing), Nicole Kang (Mary Hamilton), Meagan Tandy (Sophie Moore) and Rachel Skarsten (Alice/Beth Kane) also returning. The season kicks off Oct. 13 on The CW.
