Hulu's The Great Season 2 Trailer Welcomes Gillian Anderson to the Debauchery

Hulu released a full-length trailer for The Great Season 2, providing the first look at Gillian Anderson as Catherine's mother, Joanna.

The trailer focuses on Catherine assuming control of the Russian throne, leading to Joanna -- a "glamorous socialite from Germany [who is] sometimes also known as the 'maestro of marriage' for her abilities to arrange high profile partnerships for her daughters" -- paying her a visit. Meanwhile, Peter takes issue with Catherine's efforts to eschew violence in favor of peacefully reforming Russia and remains arrogantly convinced that his wife secretly loves him. "I look at you and go dry like sand," Catherine tells Peter at one point, much to her husband's disbelief.

Created by Tony McNamara (The Favourite), The Great is a self-described "anti-historical" dramedy series about the young Catherine the Great and her rise to power as Empress of All Russia in the 1700s. Season 1 ended with Catherine instigating a coup against Peter with the aid of her trusted allies, Count Orlo and General Velementov. However, in doing so, she also doomed her lover Leo Voronsky to be executed on Peter's orders in retaliation, having recently discovered she was pregnant, possibly with Leo's child.

According to its official description, The Great Season 2 begins with Cathrine taking the Russian throne -- "but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of ‘liberating' a country that doesn’t want to be. She’ll battle her court, her team, even her own mother in a bid to bring the enlightenment to Russia. Meanwhile she’ll also battle her heart as Peter slowly transitions from much-hated husband, to prisoner? Ally? Lover? Ultimately Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming 'Great', will ask more of her than she could have imagined."

Elle Fanning (Catherine) and Nicholas Hoult (Peter) star in The Great opposite Sacha Dhawan (Count Orto), Douglas Hodge (General Velementov), and Belinda Bromilow (Aunt Elizabeth). Season 1 received positive reviews upon its premiere in 2020, with its Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus reading: "The Great can't quite live up to its namesake, but delicious performances from Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and a wicked sense of humor make it a pretty good watch."

The Great Season 2 begins streaming Nov. 19 on Hulu.
