Harrison Ford's globe-trotting archaeologist might be headed back in time (literally) in Indiana Jones 5.
Daily Mail has posted photos from the film's set, showing Phoebe Waller-Bridge -- who's reportedly playing Dr. Jones' assistant -- dragging Ford's Indiana out of a ditch before collapsing with him in the mud. The images also reveal what seem to be Roman gladiators in a boat, complete with (relatively) historically accurate swords, shields, and helmets. It's the latter photos in particular that now have fans wondering: will Indiana Jones 5 introduce time-travel to the franchise?
Interestingly, @ViewrAnon, a Twitter user known for dropping tidbits of information about upcoming films (like this week's Halloween Kills) that later prove to be accurate, mentioned having learned that Indiana Jones 5 is "a time-travel movie" just a day before Daily Mail published these set photos. Regardless of whether that rumor pans out or not, photos leaked from the movie's set in July show Ford with dots on his face shooting a scene with his co-star Toby Jones, with the implication being that Ford will be digitally de-aged for what may be a flashback -- a figurative type of time-travel, so to speak.
In the event the film does involve time-travel, Indiana Jones 5 wouldn't be the first movie in the series to delve into the realm of science-fiction. The fourth entry in the franchise, 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, similarly pays homage to classic 1950s sci-fi B-movies with its story, which revolves around Indiana encountering inter-dimensional beings or "aliens." And although the film isn't remembered all-that-fondly by fans, the most common criticisms of Crystal Skull focus on its general execution and specific creative choices (like the "Nuke the fridge" scene), as opposed to its premise.
Time-travel rumors aside, Indiana Jones 5 reportedly picks up in the late 1960s and pits Ford's hero against a former Nazi scientist (played by Mads Mikkelsen) who's now working for NASA, as a result of the real-life secret intelligence operation known as Operation Paperclip. Logan and Ford v. Ferrari filmmaker James Mangold is co-writing and directing the movie, making it the first film in the franchise not helmed by Steven Spielberg (who's still involved as an executive producer).
Indiana Jones 5 hits theaters on July 29, 2022.
