James Gunn Debunks The Suicide Squad Polka-Dot Man Easter Egg Theory

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has debunked the idea that Calendar Man harassing Polka-Dot Man in the film was a reference to actor David Dastmalchian having played both characters.

On Twitter, Gunn was asked about the potential Easter egg, with the poster noting Dastmalchian played Calendar Man in the animated adaptation of Batman: The Long Halloween, which released earlier this year. Dastmalchian responded by saying he thought the event was entirely coincidental, and Gunn added, "I didn’t even know David played this character. It has more to do with me thinking [Sean Gunn] looks like Calendar Man in the Long Halloween comics."

A reboot/standalone sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad released in July of this year. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie sees Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) sending Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Robert DuBois/Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (John Cena), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Nanaue/King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Polka-Dot Man, Cleo Cazo/Ratcather 2 (Daniela Melchior) and a variety of other criminals to Corto Maltese. Their goal is to infiltrate a laboratory called Jötunheim and deal with "Project Starfish," which is actually Starro the Conqueror, a deadly alien capable of taking control of people's bodies with smaller versions of itself.

Currently, The Suicide Squad has grossed approximately $167.3 million worldwide against a budget of $185 million. Although normally this might be considered a poor performance at the box office, The Suicide Squad released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters as a result of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Suicide Squad quickly became the most-watched DC film on that platform, though it failed to surpass Mortal Kombat and Godzilla vs. Kong. As of writing, the movie holds a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated films in the DC Extended Universe. Currently, a spinoff TV series focused on Peacemaker is in production.

Directed by Chris Palmer and Tim Sheridan, Batman: The Long Halloween is an adaptation of the 1996/1997 limited series of the same name by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. The movie, which starred Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles as Bruce Wayne/Batman, sees the Dark Knight investigating the murder of Johnny Viti, leading to a number of big turns and revelations. As of writing, both parts of Batman: The Long Halloween hold a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Suicide Squad is available to own on digital platforms now and home media starting Oct. 26.
