REPORT: The Batman Sequel Gets Green Light | CBR

While those eager to finally see Matt Reeves' The Batman hit theaters will have to wait a little longer, it looks as if Warner Bros. is going all-in on the director's version of the Dark Knight.

According to a new report from scooper Daniel Richtman and confirmed by Batman on FilmThe Batman sequel has already been given the green light by WB and DC Films. After numerous pushbacks to its release date, the reboot of Batman, with Robert Pattison putting on the cape and cowl, will finally arrive in the spring of next year. But if the report is correct, and it seems to have considerable corroboration, then the studio is incredibly excited about this new iteration of the popular hero and ready to expand his world.

Though it's unlikely that a sequel to the film will be announced before it hits theaters, it's not hard to believe that everyone involved is game to further explore Reeves' vision. An HBO Max series set in the Gotham of the film has been in the works for some time, and Reeves will play a big part in developing it. The Batman will also crossover with the TV show, proving that Warner Bros. wants to spend more time in this take on the Caped Crusader.

While the series will focus primarily on the GCPD, another spinoff centered on the Penguin, played by Colin Farrel in the movie, is also reportedly in the works. And Richtman has claimed that two other spinoffs are planned.

Putting so much focus on one character may seem strange, but DC has always focused most of its attention on Batman and his pantheon of characters. And as HBO Max looks to build its DC projects out, centering them around the Dark Knight will certainly draw in viewers. Of course, the strategy also depends on the reception of The Batman, but WB seems to have plenty of confidence in the film already.

As for who the other rumored spinoffs could focus on, Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman seems likely. The actor worked hard to transform into Selina Kyle and a TV series further exploring her character could be a big reason the acclaimed performer agreed to sign on.

The Batman hits theaters March 4, 2022.
