Rocky III writer, director and star Sylvester Stallone revealed a behind-the-scenes secret from the 1982 film.
Stallone shared a photo of himself (as Rocky) standing toe-to-toe with Hulk Hogan's Thunderlips, the professional wrestler whom Rocky boxed in a charity event in the film. In order to make the 6-foot-4 Hogan truly tower over the 5-foot-9 Stallone, Hogan stood atop a small wooden platform, creating a forced perspective. "Might as well let another secret out of the bag before the release of Rocky IV," Stallone wrote on Instagram.
The practice of using things like platforms or lifts is commonplace in film and television, particularly when the stars are of mismatched heights or if the director needs their heights to appear disproportionate. A more recent notable example is the 5-foot-9 Tom Hardy wearing 3-inch lifts in his shoes so Bane would appear taller than the 6-foot-tall Christian Bale's Batman in The Dark Knight Rises.
As for Rocky, Stallone is currently building up hype for the November release of the long-awaited Rocky v. Drago: The Ultimate Director's Cut. The new cut features 40 minutes of previously unseen footage as the Italian Stallion battles the Soviet Union's Ivan Drago.
"[A movie's] never complete," Stallone said in April. "I've said this before, you can go back and see a movie that you've done 50 years ago [and be like] 'God, I would love to re-edit that.' And every director feels that same way. It's not about making a movie, it's about remaking [it]. Unfortunately, you run out of time, you run out of money -- they basically throw you out of the [editing] room. So, therefore, you don't get a chance. But, on [Rocky IV], we finally got a chance, so I'm feeling great about this."
While Stallone is returning to the Rocky well for his director's cut, he won't be returning for the next franchise spinoff, Creed III. "Yeah, I think that Sly let it be known that he wasn’t coming back for this one but I think, you know, his essence and his spirit… There's always going to be a little bit of Rocky within Adonis," Michael B. Jordan said in April. "So, it's always respect and always a shit-ton of love for what he's built. But we really want to push and navigate Adonis forward and the family that he created."
Rocky v. Drago: The Ultimate Director's Cut premieres on Nov. 11.
