REPORT: Sly Cooper's Return Is Imminent | CBR

One of PlayStation’s most famous characters, Sly Cooper, could soon be making his long awaiting return according to a recent leak.

Co-founder of XboxEra and reputable gaming insider @Shpeshal_Nick shared a rumor on his Twitter account, informing followers that his "normal Sony source" confirmed Sly Cooper is set to make a comeback. Nick has a reliable track record when it comes to gaming leaks, including correctly breaking the news of Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut, prior to its official announcement earlier this year. The samurai action-adventure game was coincidentally developed by the same studio as the original three Sly Cooper games, Sucker Punch Studios.

Although Nick did not offer any further information in his initial Tweet, he did respond to some questions from speculative fans, one of which asked what developer would be making the next Sly Cooper. Nick simply responded by saying "Not sure yet. Attempting to find out." The rumor has been circulating in the gaming world for while, and Sucker Punch still has its hands full following the huge success of Ghost of Tsushima. Many fans have theorized that one of Sony’s most recent studio acquisitions, Bluepoint Games, could be the developers to take the helm of the classic franchise.

With Bluepoint’s stellar track record of remaking classic games such as Demon’s Souls and Shadow of The Colossus, it is entirely possible it would opt to remake or remaster PlayStation’s most famous raccoon. Although this would be a welcome return, many fans would prefer to see a continuation of the original series considering the most recent installment ended on an agonizing cliffhanger 8 years ago. It’s also possible Sony would look to reimagine the series for a more modern audience.

While Sly Cooper hasn't had his own game since the fourth entry in the franchise, subtitled Thieves in Time, he has appeared in another PlayStation 5 exclusive. In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the thieving raccoon can be summoned to assist in battle using the powerful RYNO-8 weapon. While fun, this brief cameo doesn't confirm a new game as players can also summon Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter and the Thunderjaw and Sawtooth from Horizon Zero Dawn.

Of course, it's best to practice a spot of skepticism, as Sucker Punch Production has yet to confirm anything. Sly Cooper's excellent adventures can still be found on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
