Scarlett Johansson's Tower of Terror Role Tied to Black Widow Settlement

Scarlett Johansson's role in Disney's upcoming Tower of Terror movie adaptation is reportedly tied to her Black Widow lawsuit settlement with the company.

In its breakdown of the settlement, Puck News wrote that Disney Studios chairman Alan Bergman "knew that if he was gonna pay Johansson a chunk of her lost box office bonuses, he should roll the money into a deal for another Disney movie." This is allegedly why Bergman name-dropped Tower of Terror in his statement announcing that Disney and Johansson had come to terms over their legal dispute.

Disney's Tower of Terror movie was only announced a month before Johansson filed her lawsuit over Black Widow's hybrid release. The A-lister is attached to produce and potentially star in the film, which is being written by Toy Story 4 co-writer/helmer Josh Cooley but has yet to lock down a director. Based on Puck News' report, Johansson is all the more likely to headline Tower of Terror now, assuming the movie receives a green-light to start production.

Also known as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the Tower of Terror debuted at Walt Disney World in 1994 and has since opened at other Disney theme parks. The ride takes guests through a seemingly haunted hotel in an elevator, culminating with an intense free-fall drop. Johansson's movie would be the second screen adaptation of the attraction after 1997's Tower of Terror, a made-for-TV supernatural horror film that starred Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst.

With Black Widow marking the end of her run playing Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's unclear whether Johansson has plans for any other Disney-backed projects after Tower of Terror. In the meantime, she's collaborating with Wes Anderson on his as-yet untitled next film after The French Dispatch. Johansson is also reportedly attached to star in Greg Berlanti's Little Shop of Horrors, a new adaptation of the stage musical that would reunite her with her Avengers co-star Chris Evans.

Black Widow becomes available to all Disney+ subscribers at no extra surcharge on Oct. 6. Later this year, Johansson will reprise her animated role as the punk rocker porcupine Ash in the sequel Sing 2, which opens in theaters on Dec. 22.
