The Boys Boss Vows to Never Use Blanks While Filming in Wake of Rust's Tragic Shooting

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has vowed to ditch using "guns with blanks" on his sets following the shooting incident on the set of the Western film Rust.

The incident occurred after actor Alec Baldwin discharged a firearm on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set of the film, killing the film's director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, and critically injuring its director, Joel Souza. Hutchins, 42, was rushed via helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital and pronounced dead on the scene, while Souza, 48, was transported in an ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition at the time of initial reports. Baldwin has issued a statement regarding the incident on social media, saying that he is "fully cooperating with the police investigation" and in touch with Hutchins' family, though many people and industry members around the globe are reacting to the incident.

One such person is Kripke, who serves as showrunner for Amazon Prime Video's The Boys, a series that takes place in a world where superheroes are not the altruistic do-gooders people believe them to be. This prompts a ragtag group to come together and expose the "supes" as the arrogant and entitled menaces they really are. While the series has previously featured many scenes of gunfire and weaponry to battle these superpowered beings, Kripke said that none of his projects moving forward will include "guns with blanks."

"Someone hurt or killed on my set is my worst nightmare," said Kripke in a tweet, reaching out and "sending love" to the family of Hutchins and the cast and crew of Rust, which included Jensen Ackles, an actor soon to debut in the The Boys and previously in Kripke's CW creation, Supernatural. Kripke continued, "I'm so sorry. In [Hutchins'] memory, a simple, easy pledge: no more guns with blanks on any of my sets ever. We'll use VFX muzzle flashes. Who's with me?"

While The Boys Season 3 has already wrapped filming, this pledge appears to be apply to all of Kripke's project's moving forward, with actors and other industry members agreeing with the move. The Boys actor Jack Quaid, Overall VFX Supervisor Stephan Fleet and Supernatural alum Sebastian Roché replied with support on Twitter, with writer and producer Neil Gaiman, soon to release The Sandman on Netflix, tweeting out "We are with you."

The Rush incident is still under police investigation. The Boys Season 3 will reportedly release in mid-2022, the fourth season also reported to begin filming that year. We will have to wait and see how VFX muzzle flashes and effects will be used in the series moving forward.
