The Magic Order: How the Future Netflix Series Solved Its First Mystical Mystery

Since writer Mark Millar's MIllarworld line of books was purchased by Netflix, Jupiter's Legacy (by Millar and Frank Quitely)has been turned into a live-action TV series and a Supercrooks anime series based on Millar and Lenil Franci Yu's comic is set to debut on November 25. While works like Marvel's Civil War and Kick-Ass cemented him as one of the biggest names in comics, Millar, Olivier Coipel, Dave Stewart and Peter Doherty's The Magic Order stands as one of the most prominent Millarworld series that hasn't been brought to the small screen yet.

While work on a live-action Magic Order Netflix series is reportedly underway, the second volume of the comic book series just started. Now, we're taking a look back at the gory battle of wizards in modern-day society and the mystical mystery at the center of the comic's first volume.

The series began with a focus on the Bloodstones, who were in charge of a secret cabal that policed world magic and kept powerful relics hidden. Some of these mages moonlighted as theatrical performers, like the head, Leonard Moonstone, while his son, Regan, tried to carry on the family legacy after secretly integrating into society.

His daughter, Cordelia, became a drunk while Leonard's other kid, Gabriel, left the group as he couldn't overcome the trauma of his daughter, Rosetta, finding his wand and accidentally blowing herself and other children up. Nonetheless, the likes of Edith the Librarian, Dong-Sun, Willie the delivery man helped preserve the cabal until a nefarious face came knocking.

The villains of The Magic Order were led by Madame Albany, Leonard's cousin, who hated that the prized tome, the Orichalcum, wasn't passed down to her by her dad, Conrad. Accordingly, she began killing off members of Leonard's crew, including the old-timer himself, using a powerful and unstoppable sorcerer by the name of the Venetian.

This led to Regan and Cordelia finding Gabe and begging him to be part of the alliance once more, hoping Albany's attack on his wife, Louise, would be enough to warrant revenge. However, the finale of the six issues saw a bombshell drop as Louise was taken to the Order's relic room where Uncle Edgar kept watch over her as the united Bloodstones went after Albany.

It turns out, Gabriel was the Venetian all along, killing Regan and wanting to use Cordelia as a sacrifice. He was pissed Leonard wouldn't use the tome to bring Rosetta back so he struck a deal with Albany to get someone to infiltrate. With this deal, Albany would get the book and heroically prove her dad wrong, while he'd get his girl back at the expense of his family.

In reality, Louise was actually a shape-shifter, Cornwall, who killed Edgar to get the tome to pass on to Albany. However, Cordelia had a trump card up her sleeve because she had secretly read the Orichalcum herself in her youth, including resurrection spells. This resulted in her killing Albany's goons and using their souls as sacrifices to bring all of her family and friends back.

Ultimately, Leonard's team killed Albany, and a revived Edgar brutally murdered Cornwall to protect their archives. Gabriel was trickier to defeat, though, as he was the strongest magician of them all. However, Cordelia struck a bargain with him to resurrect Rosetta once he offered his life up. As such, he agreed, dying for his child to return.

Regan ended up adopting her while Louise, who pushed Gabriel into this scheme, was imprisoned. Cordelia then took over from Leonard, who left for some soul-searching after failing his family. This time, however, he knew the group was in good hands with a responsible and matured Cordelia at its head.
