What We Do in the Shadows: Colin Robinson's 100th Birthday Is Tragic

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 9, "A Farewell," now available on Hulu via FX.

In the three seasons of What We Do in the Shadows thus far, it's hard to say that death sticks. Given that we're dealing with vampires and such, there haven't been that many bleak moments for the main undead characters in the comedy series, but come Colin Robinson's 100th birthday, that changes drastically. And sadly, it ends with the death of the birthday boy himself in one of the most shocking moments in the series.

With the Worldwide Vampiric Council coming in for a blood banquet, Laszlo is surprisingly trying to make Colin's 100th birthday part of the festivities, annoying Nadja. They don't value Colin as much, but Laszlo insists that it be epic, giving a speech that warms the heart and making it clear that no matter how dull or annoying he has been, Colin Robinson is family.

Eventually, Laszlo secretly admits to Nadja and Guillermo that Colin was searching for intel on his origin as an energy vampire, with Laszlo coming across info in a tome that this specific breed dies when they hit a century. Laszlo stole the evidence, which is why Season 3 has had him taking Colin on many adventures. Unbeknownst to viewers, but it was to bond and help Colin Robinson to enjoy his final days.

Laszlo kept it from Colin too, but as the party goes on, Colin retires to his room, telling the housemates he has a "funny tummy," but little does he know, he's dying. It ends with Colin Robinson lying in his bed, farting and asking for a diet ginger ale. Admittedly, at this point, it does feel as though the show is pulling a fast one.

Even Nandor wakes from his slumber, adamant that Colin didn't actually die in a somber flurry of farts as his pale body's on the bed. However, when Nandor reaches for his face, he accidentally crushes Colin's expired head. It's squashed like a melon in horrific, gory fashion, ending the episode on a "sad," startling note.

It's a legitimately surprising scene, as it went from a celebration to, well, what seems to be a funeral in the making. It's truly sad if it sticks as Colin really came into his own this season, dropping more one-liners, getting more agency and verbally jousting with effect at the Staten Island home. What's also heartbreaking is Nandor insulted him early on, admitting he wouldn't remember Colin's name if he hadn't written it down on a piece of paper.

Colin Robinson's death will test the family for sure now as Guillermo only just realized he cared for Colin, while Nandor will have to reconsider his appreciation for life a bit more as he has been wallowing in self-pity. As for Laszlo, it shows he has a heart, while Nadja might reevaluate her sinister ways too and honor Colin's quaint legacy.

To bid farewell to Colin Robinson, Season 3, Episode 9 of What We Do in the Shadows is streaming now on Hulu via FX.
