Why Lord of the Rings' Walk into Mordor Quote Was Frodo's Biggest Mistake

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a spark that lights the fire of Frodo's journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring. Before The fellowship is formed, representatives of the Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits and Men appear to discuss what must be done about the Ring. At this time, Boromir's iconic "One does not simply walk into Mordor" line is uttered. However, with the story complete, it appears he was even more right than he expected.

The stories that surround Mordor have reached even the darkest corners of Middle Earth. Ever since Sauron's influence spread, his eye watches over the land as his orcs and Urk-Hai do his bidding. The land is filled with dark magic and is nearly impossible to enter, with the Black Gate being the most direct route inside. However, the one time there's a warning of its dangers, the most essential member of the fellowship chose to ignore them.

Of all of the members of the Fellowship, none was more susceptible and terrified of the Ring's power than Boromir. Like Aragorn, Boromir was a man of royal descent and stuck with Frodo during the first leg of their journey. However, toward the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, the Ring's power took hold of him, and after being at odds with the ring-bearer, he tried to take the Ring from Frodo, violently if he had to. In the end, Boromir was killed by Uruk-Hai but fought every step of the way, redeeming himself for his actions.

Before his death, Boromir was the only one to warn the others of the dangers coming to Mordor. These warnings would become even more critical once the Fellowship was forcibly disbanded. With Sam and Frodo going out on their own to Mordor, they would need all the help they could get. Sadly, the best they could find was the double-crossing and murderous Gollum. Because he knew the lands of Mordor so well, Frodo used him to get to their destination and even attempted to walk right up to the Black Gate and walk into Mordor.

Proving Boromir right, it was evident that the trio could not "simply" walk into Mordor. Instead, they had to find a way in through the massive passage, Cirith Ungol, which held even more dangerous surprises for them. Though the realization came long after the Fellowship first met, it showed that Frodo should've listened to Boromir as his superstitions surrounding the cursed land were very much correct.

Boromir's warning came from a place of fear and understanding of his limits when it came to adversaries far beyond his own skill. As a result, it's possible he came across as more unstable than he intended. Nevertheless, the fear behind his voice should've been more than enough for Frodo to understand that walking into Mordor's front door is a fool's errand. In the end, Frodo learned the hard way and wasted valuable time and strength that he could have used on his way into Mount Doom.
