7 Marvel Villains The Avengers Have Never Gone Up Against | CBR

The Avengers have fought almost every villain in the Marvel Universe at one point or another. The Earth's Mightiest Heroes are Marvel's premiere superhero team with a roster that covers many of the most (and least) popular characters the mainstream Marvel Universe has to offer.

Despite the ubiquity of the Avengers, there remains a handful of villains the team is yet to battle. Certain rogues hide in dark corners of time and space the Avengers are yet to visit. That said, given the propensity of the Avengers to end up in unexpected places, it's only a matter of time before they face these villains.

7 Baron Karl Mordo Has Only Faced The Defenders Team

Baron Karl Mordo is a well-known rival and enemy to Doctor Stephen Strange, leading to several clashes with the Sorcerer Supreme and his allies, the Defenders. Despite Strange spending a lengthy tenure with the Avengers, it hasn't led to an encounter between Mordo and Earth's Mightiest Heroes (yet).

Baron Mordo is one of the greatest sorcerers in this dimension – even if he's almost always fallen short of the skill and might of Doctor Strange himself. If they ever fought, Mordo could easily become a threat to the likes of the Avengers, and so long as Strange continues to associate himself with the team, it's only a matter of time before this happens.

6 Nightmare Has Not Meddled With The Affairs Of The Avengers

Nightmare is an interdimensional being whose dominion is the unconscious minds of mortals across his dimension. He's also battled the likes of Doctor Strange on several occasions, although he's also plagued Loki, Ghost Rider, and even the X-Men.

While Nightmare is aware of the Avengers and even had a passing interest in some of the students in the Avengers 50-State Initiative, he's yet to actually challenge the Avengers themselves. If he did, he'd be a deadly foe given the scope of his power. Some of his demonic peers such as Mephisto and Shuma-Gorath have already challenged the Avengers. So, perhaps it'll be Nightmare's turn soon.

5 Gorr, The God-Butcher Has Only Faced On Avenger In His Career

Gorr, The God-Butcher, is an alien entity who was granted vast amounts of power from All-Black, the Necrosword. He had a grudge against deities, which was so pervasive he attempted to wipe out every god in time and space. Naturally, this led to a showdown with Thor – three Thor's in fact. This battle included the Thor of the present, the Thor of the past (before he wielded Mjolnir), and King Thor from the end of the universe.

While Gorr has fought an Avenger, his rampage has never crossed paths with the Avengers as a team. He wouldn't be an easy foe to defeat, but it seems unlikely Gorr and the Avengers will fight anytime soon because, after his first major showdown with Thor, the God of Thunder sealed him inside All-Black. He wasn't awakened by Loki until King Thor's time.

4 Morlun Has Largely Been Able To Evade The Avengers

Morlun is an interdimensional vampiric entity that feeds on "Spider Totems" from across the Multiverse. These Spider Totems are spider-powered champions such as Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider among others. On his first outing, Morlun beat the Amazing Spider-Man to the brink of death and attempted to hunt him down in the hospital.

The New Avengers were actually present at the time, as Spider-Man was a member. Morlun was able to evade the New Avengers entirely and attack Spider-Man while he was still in his hospital bed. Spider-Man awoke, mutated, and killed Morlun. Of course, that wasn't the end of Morlun's crusade against Peter Parker, but that was the closest that Morlun ever came to fighting the Avengers.

3 The Avengers Weren't Involved In The Rampage Of Dark Phoenix Jean Grey

The Avengers have fought the Phoenix entity many times. During the war between the Avengers and the X-Men, the Avengers faced off against Cyclops, Colossus, Namor, Emma Frost, and Magik as five avatars of the Phoenix. More recently, the Phoenix battled the Avengers while making several superheroes from across Earth – many of who were also Avengers – participate in a tournament to become the next vessel of the Phoenix Force.

The most infamous vessel for the Phoenix, Jean Grey of the X-Men, never actually fought the Avengers during her various incarnations. She fought the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and, of course, the X-Men themselves. However, she never actually faced the Avengers as her focus seemed locked on her mutant teammates.

2 The Mangog Has Only Battled Thor, Not The Entire Avengers Team

The Mangog is another immensely-strong foe of Thor that is yet to face Thor's teammates on the Avengers. The Mangog is a vast beast powered by the hatred of an entire race wiped out by Odin. He once worked alongside a wayward Thanos android to wreak havoc upon Asgard. He later returned to fight Thor (then Jane Foster) before she hurled him into the sun alongside Asgardia and Mjolnir.

An alternate version of the Mangog also fought Power Princess in the Squadron Supreme of America, but it was killed thanks to her Bifrost Axe. Sadly, this reality was unmade by the Avengers during Heroes Return #1 by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness.

1 Mister Sinister Has Managed To Evade A Direct Confrontation With The Avengers

Mister Sinister is a longtime foe of the X-Men with a brilliant mind and a frightening power set. He has a fixation with the mutant genome and has worked alongside Apocalypse on more than one scheme. While Apocalypse, Magneto, and many other X-Men rogues have run afoul of the Avengers, Mister Sinister has managed to avoid the team so far.

He came close to a confrontation with the New Avengers during Hunt for Wolverine: Adamantium Agenda by Tom Taylor and R.B. Silva. However, Sinister opted to escape from the Avengers rather than take them head-on.
