Captain Marvel's Shadow Looms Over Ms. Marvel's First Official Synopsis

The synopsis for the upcoming Disney+ show Ms. Marvel has been revealed.

The series, expected to premiere on the streaming platform in Summer 2022, revolves around a teenage girl who looks up to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). The official synopsis reads, "Ms. Marvel introduces Kamala Khan--a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City. An aspiring artist, an avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she is a huge fan of the Avengers—and one in particular, Captain Marvel. But Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to."

Vellani discussed her role as Ms. Marvel back in August in an interview with Variety. "The fact that the show is being made and they're including this character in the MCU is [what's important]," Vellani explained. "I don't really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani – it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough."

The series is expected to contain six episodes and will directly tie into the upcoming 2023 film The Marvels, which will star Vellani, Larson as Captain Marvel and WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. While Ms. Marvel is set to focus on Kamala Khan’s admiration for Captain Marvel AKA Carol Danvers, it is unknown as to whether Larson will reprise her role in the Disney+ show.

The show will feature Iman Vellani in the starring role as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, with other cast members including Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur as Kamala’s parents, Aramis Knight, Rish Shah, Matt Lintz and Saagar Shaikh. The synopsis continues to read that the show is directed by executive producers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with executive producer Bisha K. Ali serving as the show’s head writer.

Ms. Marvel was officially announced back at the D23 Expo in 2019 and was initially slated for a late 2021 release. The official synopsis announcement comes as a part of Disney+ Day, where Marvel Studios have also released information about future shows, including Echo, Spiderman: Freshman Year, Secret Invasion and more.
