Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red believes that players will eventually see the controversial RPG as a good video game.
Speaking to Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, CD Projekt Red president Adam Kiciński said that he firmly believes that gamers will eventually forget the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077. "We’re proud of many aspects of the game, but as we know, not everything went our way. Nevertheless, the brand awareness of Cyberpunk that we’ve managed to build is huge, and the game universe, its characters and details have fans all over the world," said Kiciński. "We believe that in the long run Cyberpunk 2077 will be perceived as a very good game, and like our other titles, it will sell for years – especially as the hardware gets more powerful over time and we improve the game."
Kiciński went on to explain that Cyberpunk 2077 is the most ambitious and technically complicated game the developer has ever produced, going on to say that once the game is properly fixed it will likely be remembered far more fondly. "Releasing a game in a new franchise brings many challenges and risks, especially when the concept is so complex. We brought to life a huge, vibrant futuristic city called Night City, where the characters’ non-linear stories take place," said Kiciński.
Launching in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077's release was what many would consider a debacle. Despite several significant delays and over eight years in development, the title was riddled with game-breaking bugs and glitches. It was also largely unplayable on older consoles, barely running on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The response from players was so negative that Sony delisted the game from the PlayStation Store and offered refunds for anyone who purchased Cyberpunk 2077.
Following the backlash from fans, CD Project Red vowed to fix the game with a series of post-launch patches. Several significant updates have since been released and while the game is certainly more stable, many fans are disappointed with the slow progress. In order to ensure Cyberpunk 2077 is in the best possible condition, the developer also delayed its upcoming expansions and the next-gen port that would take full advantage of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. "The decision to postpone the next-gen version of Cyberpunk was a difficult one, but we are confident that it was the right one, especially since it was clearly recommended by our development team,” concluded Kiciński.
