Converse Catches Pokémon Sneaker and Apparel Collaboration | CBR

As part of Pokémon's twenty-fifth-anniversary celebration, it's teaming up with popular shoe company Converse to provide a selection of Pokémon-inspired footwear.

The collection of shoes, set for release on Dec. 10, can be viewed via Hypebeast, where each design spotlights a Pokémon from the game's first generation region, Kanto. The Pokémon adorning the sneakers also have strong ties to the Pokémon anime series, with Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Meowth and Jigglypuff all featuring prominently.

The collection reimagines the Chuck Taylor All Star range from Converse with Pokémon designs. The first high-ankle design gives off a classic vibe, with black and white images of all the previously mentioned Pokémon; a color Pokéball also embellishes the shoe near the ankle. The second high-ankle shoe pays homage to the original Gen 1 starter Pokémon, including Pikachu, as they form a line in their true colors upon a black fabric. Meanwhile, a sole Jigglypuff appears on the instep of the shoe near the heel.

Two vibrant, low top sneakers take their inspiration from Jigglypuff and Pikachu. The Velcro-fastened shoes come in a fairy pink and electric yellow for the two Pokémon, respectively. Finally, there's a black "25th Celebration Tour" hoodie picturing the franchise's mascot, Pikachu, decorated sparsely with the Pokémon's classic thunderbolt motif. The back of the hoodie also includes fake tour dates for each of the Pokémon regions, from Kanto to Galar. Other pieces of apparel, not pictured on Hypebeast, include "a sherpa-lined Jigglypuff crewneck, Pokémon Team and Pikachu tees and a range of accessories from backpacks to camp caps."

Celebrations have been ongoing for Pokémon's twenty-fifth anniversary throughout 2021. Recently a new Pokémon Trading Card Expansion set was released, aptly named Celebrations. The new expansion set includes classic cards for Umbreon, Charizard and the popular Pikachu birthday card. In further celebration of the quarter-century anniversary, the Generation 4, Sinnoh-based remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, were released on Nov. 19. The current core series games have spruced the games up with a new Chibi art style and the reinvented Grand Underground.

The Pokémon franchise began back in 1996 with the release of Pocket Monsters: Red and Green, which would later be released as Pokémon Red and Blue versions. The trading card game first came on the scene in Japan in the same year, while the anime series featuring Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu began airing in 1997. Both would make their way to the United States in 1998.
