Cowboy Bebop Wanted Posters Bring the Classic Anime Villains to Live Action

New posters for Netflix's live-action Cowboy Bebop show off some of the villains Spike Spiegel, Jet Black and Faye Valentine will face in the first season -- and their substantial bounties.

The images, which were shared by the official Cowboy Bebop Twitter, show Asimov Solensan (Jan Uddin), a criminal who steals a potent drug called Bloody Eye; Pierre La Fou (Josh Randall), a deadly and unstable killer dressed as a clown; Teddy Bomber (Rodney Cook), a terrorist who uses teddy bear bombs in his fight against capitalism; Abdul Hakim (Cali Nelle), a thief who steals a valuable, genetically modified dog; and Maria Murdock (Adrienne Barbeau), an eco-terrorist. In addition to their bounties, each wanted poster also lists the crimes and biographic information of those on them.

Created by Sunrise, Cowboy Bebop was a science fiction anime that ran for one season in 1998. The show followed the bounty hunters of the spaceship Bebop -- Spike, Jet and Faye -- as they tried (and often failed) to catch intergalactic criminals. A number of episodes also explored the complicated pasts of the show's main trio and dark themes. Despite Cowboy Bebop's short run, the show developed a cult following and is often considered one of the greatest anime ever. After the anime ended, an animated film, titled Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door, released in 2001.

A live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop has been in development for quite a long time. In 2008, Matrix actor Keanu Reeves was attached to play Spike in a movie that later entered development hell. However, in 2018, Netflix acquired the series for streaming. Initially, production began in 2019, but Spike actor John Cho suffered a knee injury that delayed the project by several months. Overall, first looks at the live-action Cowboy Bebop have indicated that it will be relatively faithful to the source material, though certain changes have been made in the adaptation process.

Cowboy Bebop arrives on Netflix on Nov. 19, 2021 with a pilot written by Christopher Yost and directed by Alex Garcia Lopez. The series, which will run for ten hour-long episodes, stars Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Elena Satine as Julia and Alex Hassell as Vicious.
