Far Cry 3's Michael Mando Would Love a Live-Action Vaas Adaption

If Ubisoft greenlights a film or televised version of their Far Cry franchise, Michael Mando wants dibs on the chance to play Vaas again.

Mando, who returned to voice Far Cry 3's charismatically sadistic villain Vaas Montenegro in the new Far Cry 6 DLC campaign Vaas: Insanity, spoke to Gamingbible about previous attempts at making a live-action movie happen. "I spoke with Ubisoft in Italy a few years ago. We had coffee and I told [them] a couple of ideas that I had for a film," said Mando. "And I have a couple of really great ideas I spoke about with Greg Russo who is really interested in Vaas as a character and making a film," he explained. "I spoke to some writers from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul about it, and there's a lot of interest there. I've also spoken to producers here in Los Angeles that are interested. I think if the fans really asked for it, I feel we could give it to them, right? I think we're very close, we'll see where it goes."

When asked what kind of Vaas story he'd want to tell, Mando revealed that he's "interested in pulling back a little bit, going back and trying to see how he got there. Kind of like an origin story would be fascinating." The Better Call Saul star also confirmed that he's working on a story that "would take place with the Vaas we know now, but that takes place on a huge, huge international scale. I can't say anything yet, but hopefully people will keep asking for it. And we'll sit down, and give it to the people.”

Although the idea has yet to gain traction, Mando already has extensive experience playing a live-action Vaas. Far Cry 3's marketing campaign included traditional commercials and the in-universe miniseries The Far Cry Experience. The latter saw Vaas' pirate crew capture Christopher Mintz-Plasse's camera team while filming a reality show on Rook Islands. The violent criminal eventually subjects the Superbad star to a series of over-the-top torture sequences.

Despite being Far Cry 3's secondary antagonist, Vaas, whom Ubisoft created specifically for Mando, was featured heavily across the game's advertising and box art, going on to be the standout character upon release. His influence led to Far Cry sequels leaning into their charismatic villains. These include Far Cry 4's Pagan Min, Far Cry 5's Joseph Seed and most recently Far Cry 6's Antón Castillo, played by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito.

Vaas: Insanity is currently part of Far Cry 6's Season Pass, which will also feature stories focused on Min and Seed's characters. Mando is currently filming Better Call Saul's sixth and final season, which, according to actor Rhea Seehorn, will be divided into two parts.

Far Cry 6 is currently available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC.
