Genshin Impact Surprises Fans by Revealing Two New Characters

Without any indication, Genshin Impact revealed background information and designs for two upcoming characters: Polearm wielders Shenhe and Yun Jin.

The brand-new characters were unveiled via the Genshin Impact Twitter page on the same day the 2.3 version update was released. The announcement came seemingly out of the blue, surprising fans of the open-world gacha game. While there was precious little revealed about Shenhe and Yun Jin beyond the minimal background info, their links to the Liyue region and relationships to existing characters may provide some insight into their roles in the game.

Shenhe comes from a branch family of a clan of exorcists in the Liyue region and is a pupil of Cloud Retainer, an adeptus residing on Mt. Aocang. She wields a polearm in her artwork and is attached to the cryo element, much like Rosaria of Mondstadt. The "Ethereal Soul Amidst the Mortal Realm," as she is also known, shares the cryo element with Aloy, the protagonist of Horizon: Zero Dawn, who was added to the game in September.

Like Shenhe, Yun Jin claims a polearm for her weapon and is also from the region of Liyue. She is the Director of the Yun-Han Opera Troupe, which may explain her fame in Liyue Harbour's performing arts scene. Yun Jin works at the Heyu Tea House and is said to be a prestigious dancer, singer and brewer. When she eventually debuts in Genshin Impact, she will join the ranks of the geo element. Two new geo characters in Arataki Itto and Gorou have joined the game as part of the 2.3 version update, which will bring the element up to 8 in total when Yun Jin joins.

Genshin Impact has been rewarding players of late, firstly with the launch of version 2.3 on Nov. 22, followed by the release of these new character bios. This may be a way to earn back players' trust after the negative reaction around Genshin Impact's first-anniversary event, which both frustrated and underwhelmed fans. The game's developer and publisher, miHoYo, promised players would receive certain items and Mora, the main currency used in the game. However, this did not sufficiently satisfy players for what was supposed to be a celebratory event. A major complaint was that many rewards were part of the loot box-esque system inherent in the gacha genre, further annoying fans who had put in so much time and money into Genshin Impact since its launch.

Genshin Impact is an anime-style action role-playing game that was initially released in September 2020 for PC, Android, iOS and PlayStation 4. It has since received a PlayStation 5 release in April and is set to come to the Nintendo Switch, though miHoYo has yet to place a specific release date on the port.
