Kim Cattrall officially joined the cast of Hulu's How I Met Your Mother spinoff series, How I Met Your Father.
As reported by Deadline, Cattrall joins the series in a major recurring role, which will be similar to the role Bob Saget played in the original series, as the future version of Hilary Duff's Sophie, who is telling her son the story of how she met his father, just as Josh Radner and Saget's Ted Mosby did with his children in How I Met Your Mother.
Cattrall is a Golden Globe-winning actor, known for her role as Samantha Jones in HBO's Sex and the City, and most recently finished work on About My Father opposite Robert DeNiro, a film inspired by the life of comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.
Cattrall joins main cast members Francia Raisa as Valentina, Tom Ainsley as Charlie, Tien Traun as Ellen, Suraj Sharma as Sid and Chris Lowell as Jesse as Sophie's close-knit group of friends. Most recently, Turner & Hooch's Josh Peck and American Gods' Ashley Reyes were added to the cast as Drew and Hannah, respectively. The spinoff series will follow Sophie as she recounts to her son how she and his father first came together in a story, as described by Hulu, that "catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options."
Written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, Hulu placed a straight to series order on How I Met Your Father was in April 2021. Duff will serve in both the starring role and as a producer, alongside HIMYM creators/executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and original series director/executive producer Pam Fryman.
How I Met Your Father serves as a sequel to CBS' long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which aired for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014, ending with a divisive series finale. HIMYM followed Radnor's Ted Mosby -- with an older Ted voiced by Saget -- as he recounted to his children the story of how he met their mother. The series featured TEd's own close friend group, which included Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and on-again-off-again love interest Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders).
How I Met Your Father does not currently have an official premiere date.
