How SMT V's New Game Plus Modes Work | CBR

After making rolling credits on Shin Megami Tensei V, players will unlock two new ways to experience the Nahobino's story on subsequent playthroughs. Like many other contemporary titles, SMT V offers New Game+, allowing players to carry over some data from their previous save to make the game a little bit easier to replay. However, Atlus took a less traditional approach to New Game+ for SMT V, though one that will be familiar to those who completed Shin Megami Tensei IV.

To access New Game+, players will need to go to "Load Game" on SMT V's home menu. From there, pick the cleared save file you'd like to carry over data from. This will leave the player with two options, which impact what gets carried over and how challenging the subsequent playthrough will be.

Of the two options, SMT V's Newborn mode is closer to what most players expect from a New Game+. By choosing this option, players will carry over enemy info for those encountered in their cleared save (including those who were seen but not registered), the Demon Compendium, unlocked fusions and some of their Miracles (namely the Demon Proficiency Miracles, which unlock more skill slots for demon allies). As such, the game should remain about as challenging as it was on the first playthrough (unless the player chooses a higher difficulty option), though with some helpful information and features.

Battles will be just as difficult, and the Nahobino will once again need to fight to build up their strength and earn items as they go. However, playing on Newborn eliminates much of the guesswork from combat as, so long as you encountered a demon in the original playthrough, its affinity and weakness data will be displayed right away. The same holds true for bosses, meaning players won't need to waste a precious press turn using a Spyglass or experimenting with different elements and hoping they aren't blocked.

Players who want to experience Shin Megami Tensei V again while making combat much easier should choose Reborn. On top of everything included in Newborn, this mode allows players to start from the beginning with the Nahobino they built during their previous playthrough, maintaining their stats, level and Miracles. Additionally, players will be able to keep the party they finished the game with, their Macca and non-key items, and their Glory.

Since players will probably need to be at least level 80 to defeat SMT V's final boss, carrying over the Nahobino's level and stats will make most of the game's encounters and boss fights a breeze. This makes Reborn a decent option for those who want to get through the story as quickly as possible to experience the game's other endings and late-game side-quests without having to grind or retry battles.
