Invasion: Mitsuki and JASA Face Major Problems With U.S. | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for the first five episodes of Invasion, now streaming on Apple TV+.

The latest episode of Invasion, "Going Home," changes the landscape drastically as the world finally gets confirmation that aliens are encroaching. America's president goes live on air to alert the globe as to what's happening, although cogs have already been turning behind the scenes with the U.S. making a secret alliance with Japan. However, as much as it seems like both nations will be cooperating for the betterment of mankind, this new coalition already has a major problem.

Japan's space program holds key intel after one of its vessels seemingly got rammed into by an alien craft. The head engineer on board, Hinata, and her crew are presumed dead, but a message has been sent back to Earth via one word, "Wajo," which means "castle" in English.

Mitsuki's left to decode it, desperate to find out if Hinata's alive after they hid their lesbian love affair. Luckily, Hinata's dad, Ikuro, has helped Mitsuki unlock parts of it, which has her rushing back to the job. Unfortunately, she's not well-received as she broke protocol and stole the data, but her boss, Hashimoto, is surprisingly forgiving.

He understands she wants to find out if her beloved's alive, but he makes it clear the world's safety has to be a priority too. Hearing this "language without sound" leaves him petrified as he knows that with the world's comms down, satellites falling all over and tech being affected, the aliens aren't just sending a message -- it's most likely a kill signal to weaken the planet. As such, before America breaks news, Hashimoto tells Mitsuki he'll turn a blind eye to her stealing equipment.

He needs her to unearth the secrets as he can't trust America. She can use Hinata's dad or even another colleague, Satoshi, but as of now, he has to disavow her. Their superiors have called for her to be fired, but Hashimoto is confident she'll crack the case, placing immense faith in her genius.

He lost his wife due to illness, after all, and knows what it's like to beg for a second chance, so he can count on her going all out. More so, he's glad he has someone outside his and NASA's jurisdiction plugging away because part of him wonders if America could be manipulating Japan, using them as a pawn in first contact. What compounds this is it looks like America's kept it secret about their troops facing hostile aliens in Afghanistan.

It'll come down to politics and sharing information, with hints that Hashimoto might be hiding more than he's letting on, all to protect Mitsuki. Either way, she's got a very important task at hand, but she's got to stay off the radar for fear of being branded a rebel and traitor by the two most important world powers in the show.

Invasion's first five episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+. New episodes become available every Friday.
