Keanu Reeves Doesn't Want John Wick or Neo in Mortal Kombat | CBR

It appears Mortal Kombat won't be welcoming Neo or John Wick to its lineup of fighters anytime soon, with Keanu Reeves explicitly stating he doesn’t want a crossover to happen.

In an interview with Esquire to promote the upcoming The Matrix: Resurrections film, Reeves is posed a number of questions regarding rumors from the internet. When asked whether he'd personally allow either John Wick or Neo to guest star in a Mortal Kombat game, the actor bluntly states, "If it were up to me? No," dispelling any chance of his two most recognizable roles joining the fighting game series. Reeves goes on to say, "Mortal Kombat is awesome, in so many ways, but I think, um, you know, Neo, John Wick, yeah, man. They're doing their own thing. Mortal Kombat is doing their own thing."

During the same interview, Reeves was asked several more questions relating to his career. The actor discusses the surrealism of returning to play Neo 18 years on from The Matrix Revolutions and expresses a desire to potentially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The beloved actor states, "It would be an honor. There are some really amazing directors and visionaries, and they're doing something no one's really ever done. It's special in that sense, in terms of the scale, the ambition, the production. It would be cool to be a part of that."

Mortal Kombat is no stranger to adding iconic characters from a host of other mediums as guest fighters. Kratos from the God of War franchise was a playable character alongside Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street in Mortal Kombat 9. Continuing the tradition in Mortal Kombat X, NetherRealm studios added the Xenomorph (Alien) and Predator (Predator) as DLC characters. Even the Terminator and John Rambo have joined the series as fighters in the most recent title, Mortal Kombat 11.

The Mortal Kombat series has also featured prominent crossovers with DC Comics, starting with 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe game. The two worlds merged into one after Raiden and Superman unwittingly force their enemies, Shao Khan and Darkseid, respectively, to combine and form Dark Khan. The game included a large roster of DC characters including, Batman, Catwoman and The Flash. Despite its mixed critical reception, this title led to the Mortal Kombat series being rebooted in 2011, followed by Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, a DC fighting game heavily influenced by NetherRealm's ultra-violent franchise. Several characters from Mortal Kombat would appear in Injustice and its sequel as DLC fighters, with Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden all making appearances.

While it seems unlikely that Neo or John Wick will be joining any future Mortal Kombat games, Matrix fans don't have to wait too long to see Reeves back in action. Directed by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix: Resurrections releases theatrically and is available to stream via HBO Max on Dec. 22.
