Latest Xbox Backwards Compatibility Update Will be its Last | CBR

The backwards compatibility program for Xbox Series X|S consoles will receive no new additions from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 libraries following the program's latest and final update.

Within the announcement post concerning the 70+ games coming to the program in its most recent update, Xbox compatibility lead Peggy Lo stated in an official Xbox Wire blog post that this most recent expansion will also be the last. "While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games," Lo explained, "we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints. Thank you for being part of this journey with us."

The backwards compatibility program initially began on the Xbox One in 2015 before becoming available at launch on the Xbox Series X|S consoles in 2020. With this last update, Microsoft's most recent console now supports over 60 original Xbox games, roughly 600 Xbox 360 games and most Xbox One games. Not only are these platforms supported but the program also utilizes the full power of the Series X|S console, providing players with superior visual fidelity, improved rendering and the highest possible graphical quality. What's more, a new FPS Boost feature was added earlier this year that further enhances the framerate for select titles.

Many games from both the original Xbox and Xbox 360 libraries will not be playable via backwards compatibility after this most recent update. The vast majority of the original Xbox's library remains unsupported while more than 1,500 Xbox 360 titles have also been left out. Some noticeable absences include Ninja Gaiden, Mech Assualt, X-Men Legends, Blur, Project Gotham Racing, Jet Set Radio Future and Shadow the Hedgehog.

As for the games that have made the cut, Xbox backwards compatibility now supports the entire Max Payne, F.E.A.R and Skate franchises alongside new additions from the original Xbox library like Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II and Star Wars: Starfighter.

The final update also brings the FPS Boost feature to 26 titles in the existing catalog, with games such as Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins and the entire Gears of War franchise all receiving a smoother gameplay experience.
