Nintendo fans are expressing their frustration with the publisher following the reveal of one of its major Black Friday deals: A Switch console bundled with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition.
The announcement, made on Twitter, confirms that gamers will be able to pick up a Nintendo Switch console with a copy of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition and three months of Nintendo Switch Online for $299.99 USD. While the price itself may be appealing, fans are criticizing the bundle itself. Many are expressing frustration that Nintendo has offered this particular combo for Black Friday on several occasions, never featuring a different game. Others are concerned that the included console is the original version rather than the so-called "Red Box" Switch which uses a more efficient chipset. Based on the images included in the tweets, the offered console appears to be the revised Switch.
2021 marks the fourth successive year that Nintendo has offered the Nintendo Switch/Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition bundle for Black Friday. Many fans are requesting a different combination, others are wondering when they'll see a new Mario Kart game. Maro Kart 8 originally launched for the Wii U in 2014, while the Deluxe Edition was ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2017. The game continues to be a massive title for Nintendo, currently sitting as the best-selling Switch game, having moved approximately 38.74 million copies.
While most players are focused on Mario Kart, others are disappointed that the bundle isn't for the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. The most recent iteration of the hybrid console launched in October 2021 and includes a variety of minor hardware upgrades. The OLED Model features a larger screen, an improved back-stand and a dedicated LAN port in the dock. Many believe this console should be included in a Black Friday bundle but given the recent launch of the updated console, it's unlikely that Nintendo will be adding it to any significant deals.
While the Black Friday bundle has sparked ire, it's not the only reason why Nintendo fans are currently disappointed in the company. Many were frustrated with the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, which added several poorly ported Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis games to the subscription service. Many questioned how the Expansion Pack could cost $49.99 USD, a sharp price increase from the base subscription service given the small amount of content it added.
Nintendo has yet to comment on the outrage surrounding the Black Friday bundle.
