Ridley Scott revealed that a live-action Blade Runner series is moving forward along with the previously announced Alien TV show.
“We [have already] written the pilot for ‘Blade Runner’ and the bible. So, we’re already presenting ‘Blade Runner’ as a TV show, the first 10 hours," Scott told the BBC (per Variety). He reaffirmed that Alien is receiving a "similar" treatment, with its pilot script finished and work now underway on the remaining episodes for its first season.
Directed by Scott, the first Blade Runner movie starred Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard: a former police officer tasked with hunting down rogue androids known as replicants in an alternate, dystopian Los Angeles circa 2019. The noir-flavored sci-fi film (which adapted Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) infamously bombed at the box office in 1982 before achieving cult classic status in the decades after. Ford reprised his role for Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049, another commercial flop that earned critical acclaim and took home a pair of Oscars, including Roger Deakins' first win for Best Cinematography.
Where the Blade Runner universe only recently made the move to the small screen with the debut of the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, FX's Alien series marks the sci-fi horror property's first TV spinoff. Fargo and Legion showrunner Noah Hawley is developing the series, which takes place on Earth (unlike the previous Alien films) and does not feature Ellen Ripley: the iconic heroine first played by Sigourney Weaver in Scott's original 1979 movie.
Scott has remained creatively involved with the Alien and Blade Runner franchises over the years, having served as an executive producer on Blade Runner 2049 and directed a pair of Alien prequels (Prometheus and Alien: Covenant) released in the 2010s. He's also producing FX's Alien series, although that didn't stop Scott from taking a playful swipe at the project in October, declaring, "It’ll never be as good as the first one."
The live-action Blade Runner and Alien TV shows have yet to receive release dates. Elsewhere, Scott's latest directorial effort, the biographical crime drama House of Gucci, opens in theaters on Nov. 24, just under a week before his period drama The Last Duel premieres on all major digital platforms.
