Spider-Man: Why Doc Ock Has Red Tentacles in No Way Home? | CBR

The official trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally dropped, jam-packed with references, Easter eggs and hints of things to come. Marvel has been open about actor Alfred Molina reprising his role as Doctor Octavius, with the latest trailer giving the best look at him yet. While the character looks mostly the same as he did in 2004's Spider-Man 2, the Doc's robotic tentacles seem to take on a new red look after interacting with Peter Parker. However, this new aesthetic is likely more than just a simple paint job.

The No Way Home trailer gives an extended look at the bridge-scene fight between Doctor Octavius and Spider-Man. It seems the fight ends with Doc Ock capturing Spider-Man and realizing it's not the Peter Parker he knows. During this scene, there's a shot of red nano-tech creeping up Doc's tentacles, bulking them up. Though it's unclear how, it seems that Doc is able to transfer the nano-tech from Parker's suit and attract it to his own gear.

It may be that the tentacles' artificial intelligence can control and integrate with the nano-tech. Much like the original Spider-Man 2, it seems the tentacles sometimes take on a mind of their own. And assuming this version of Doctor Octavius is still from the early 2000s, it would be unlikely that he knows about nano-tech as intricate as Spider-Man's. Therefore, its integration into his tentacles might be just as surprising to him as it is to Peter. But other than giving the arms a fresh coat of paint, there could be more to it than that.

At the very least, it's a safe bet to say that the new arms will be stronger than ever. Numerous fights, like the one between Thanos and Iron Man on Titan, have shown how much the tech can take a beating. And despite the red nano-tech not taking over the entire tentacles, it's likely they have the same regenerative ability as Peter's suit. The upgrade in strength could even aid in resisting Electro's electricity, which was a big reveal in the trailer.

However, there's a chance the tech's power could reach even further. It's entirely possible that the tentacles, or at least the claws, will be able to change shape at will, making them an even more useful tool. And with being integrated with the tentacles AI, the nano-tech could aid in tasks like hacking and possibly even boost the inhibitor chip plugged into the Doc's back.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see the outcome of Doc Ock's new tentacles in No Way Home and whether he decides to use them for good or aid the numerous villains making their way through the multiverse.

To see what's going on with Doc Ock's new arms, Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters Dec. 17.
