The Book of Boba Fett will explore the power vacuum in the Star Wars underworld in the wake of Jabba the Hutt's demise, according to executive producer Jon Favreau.
Favreau, who helmed Boba Fett's production alongside The Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni and director Robert Rodriguez, spoke with Empire about what Star Wars fans can expect from the upcoming show. Specifically, Favreau explained how the series' story was shaped by the death of Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi, saying, "You pull somebody like [Jabba] out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space in general – and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre."
"There is a power vacuum, because Jabba is gone," he continued. "Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist."
Following the death of Jabba at the hands of Princess Leia in Episode VI, the post-credits scene from the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian revealed that the Hutt's disciple Bib Fortuna had risen to succeed his former master on his seat of power. However, the scene swiftly concluded with Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) dispatching Fortuna and claiming the throne for themselves. The Book of Boba Fett is set to pick up where The Mandalorian left off, with the former bounty hunter taking on the difficult task of establishing honor among thieves in the Star Wars underworld.
"Although Boba Fett is a very experienced bounty hunter, he’s not experienced at running a criminal syndicate or managing forces,” Favreau added. “He’s not normally a newcomer. He’s an expert as we see him in most areas. But in this case, he’s trying to transition to another position."
In addition to the villainous Hutt, the destruction at Jabba's palace in Return of the Jedi was originally thought to be the end of Boba Fett. The character had since been revived numerous times in non-canon Star Wars media, but it was Season 2 of The Mandalorian that finally verified the bounty hunter's survival of the Sarlacc Pit in the Disney Star Wars canon. Boba Fett's tumultuous journey from his debut as a fan-favorite character to his eventual fall and revival was chronicled in the recent documentary Under The Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett, which premiered on Disney+ Day ahead of the character's spinoff series.
The first trailer for The Book of Boba Fett premiered earlier this month, unveiling a plethora of new alien characters, Star Wars Easter eggs, and various criminal factions with which Fett will be forced to contend. The trailer also delivered glimpses at a handful of tense action sequences, which the series' creators say will showcase the fearsome side of Boba Fett that fans have come to love.
"We’ll see a lot more of his true character in this season,” said Rodriguez, who directed multiple episodes of the season. “And you’ll definitely see him have to turn ‘barbarian mode’.”
The Book of Boba Fett premieres on Disney+ on Dec. 29.
