The Walking Dead: World Beyond: Why Huck Went Undercover | CBR

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2, Episode 6, “Who Are You?,” which aired Sunday November 7th on AMC.

Even before World Beyond began, the CRM was a clandestine fixture in the The Walking Dead universe. Likewise, Colonel Kublek – hitherto, the series’ big bad -- has also been a figure of mystery, but last week, she exited World Beyond for the foreseeable future and left Jadis in her stead. The question of exactly how good, or bad, the colonel truly was may never be answered, but fans may eventually get an explanation about her daughter Huck.

At the beginning of the series, fans thought that Huck was simply traveling across the county to help Felix protect Iris and Hope’s group. However, that was far from the truth. She was actually a CRM mole, tasked with manipulating Hope into helping her father with his research at the CRM’s facility. At that point, she looked like a complete villain, but since then, her loyalties have become more complicated. Now, in “Who are You?” Huck revealed the reason that she went undercover in the first place.

The conversation happened when Huck and Felix were sneaking into Lyla’s secret lab to investigate mysterious paperwork connecting to the slaughter at the Campus Colony. First, Huck told Felix that she was married, and she had been trying to cover for her husband, Dennis (the sanitation guy) when she got into trouble.

He was in charge of a training operation when things went sideways. He made a call, and people died. Even though Dennis’s actions probably saved people in the long run, he had been drinking during the operation. Someone had to take the fall for the failure, and the drinking would have been an easy way for the CRM to place blame. So, Huck took the fall for the failed operation and erased the only evidence that proved the otherwise.

They would have gotten away with it, but Huck forgot to wipe the access card log when she erased the evidence and, thus, exposed her lie. As a result, Huck had to do something dramatic to get back into the good graces of the CRM. So, she agreed to go deep undercover as a mole inside of the Campus Colony. She broke her arm and cut her face, then washed up on a riverbank outside of the colony. She was only supposed to observe and report, until the CRM became interested in Hope.

She did her job and got Hope into the research facility, but since then, she hasn’t been exactly committed to the CRM. She stopped trusting her mother, Colonel Kublek, and took Hope to see her friends at the Perimeter community. She was the one that stole papers from her mother’s office that seemed to implicate the CRM in the annihilation of the Campus Colony. Then, in this week’s episode, she snuck into the secret lab with Felix. After they had some trouble, she told Felix, “I am with you, at least until I can’t be.” The first part of that statement seemed to indicate that she was against the CRM, but she definitely left herself some wiggle room with the latter half. So, at the end of the episode, her loyalties were still up in the air.

To see which side Huck winds up on, tune into The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The series airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and is available to stream early on AMC+.
