The Wheel of Time executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins disclosed that Marcus Rutherford, who plays Perrin Aybara in the Amazon Prime Video adaptation, has a nose acting coach.
In a Reddit AMA, a user asked, "How are you thinking of showing the range of emotions and other things that Perrin is able to smell? Does Marcus have a special nose acting coach?" Judkins responded, "He actually, genuinely does. Ha,", adding that Rutherford is "doing great with it."
Perrin is one of The Wheel of Time's most prominent characters. The books describe him as a six-and-a-half-foot Ta'veren and Wolfbrother with a well-built physique. As a Ta'veren, Perrin has been touched by the Pattern, which allows him to affect the probability of things happening, such as causing a rider to fall off their horse. Perrin, Rand al'Thor and Mabriam en Shereed are the only notable living Ta'veren during the events of the books. As a Wolfbrother, Perrin is able to form relationships with wolves and even possess some wolf-like attributes. He can locate and communicate with wolves or his fellow wolfkin and has enhanced vision that allows him to see very far and in the dark. Perrin can also smell aspects, such as emotion, that cannot be perceived by normal humans.
Amazon is expanding on its adaptation and exploring different facets of the lore, even announcing a series of animated shorts set to release with each episode of The Wheel of Time. The shorts aim to build on the show's prehistory, touching on important bits that give The Wheel of Time its distinct flair.
Judkins, who is a fan of the books, discussed what the series means to him, stating, "I feel the personal pressure because I love this series. I fought to get it made for TV and that fight was so hard. It's a success we're getting it made but now I face the additional pressure to do everyone proud."
Ensuring that The Wheel of Time series stays true to the books is something that Judkins recently touched on. He revealed that since the Prime Video adaptation only has eight episodes, the production has had to cut back on some aspects of the stories present in the books. "There are so many production choices that need to be made, so many things that need to be trimmed, just because we only have eight episodes to tell the story," Judkins said.
The first three episodes of The Wheel of Time are streaming on Prime Video.
