Marcus Rutherford shared a closer look at the satchel he carries as Perrin Aybara on Prime Video's adaptation of The Wheel of Time.
Shared as a story on the actor's Instagram, the up-close look at the satchel reveals some thematically important details for his character. Faintly sketched onto the leather appears to be two wolves standing beneath a tree. Rutherford included the phrase "The smaller details" alongside a wolf emoji, confirming they aren't merely dogs. Another prominent feature of the design is the emphasis placed on the green leaves that could reference a conversation Perrin has in the show.
Perrin's story in The Wheel of Time so far has seen him coming into contact with wolves more than once. Despite being wary of the animals, they have yet to cause him any harm. The beasts, in fact, seem to be helping the lost blacksmith, licking his wounds and even guiding him to safety. Season 1, Episode 5, "Blood Calls Blood," saw Perrin's eyes changing to a bright yellow, and the wolves came to his and Egwene's rescue by mauling their captors. While the show has yet to explain his unusual abilities, executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins revealed that Rutherford has a nose acting coach for the role.
Rutherford previously described Perrin as the group's "gentle giant." Despite this, the adaption changed the beginning of his story to include him accidentally killing his own wife during the Trollocs' attack. Season 1, Episode 4, "The Dragon Reborn," saw him learning about the Way of the Leaf, a pacifist ideology followed by the Tuatha'an. This could be the reason for the tree on the satchel, as Rutherford's character is caught between the need to fight and the fear of the harm he could cause.
Moiraine disclosed in the first episode that Perrin, alongside Egwene, Mat, and Rand, could possibly be the prophecized Dragon Reborn. Each of the potential candidates has exhibited strange behaviors throughout Season 1, making it uncertain who it could be. The series has also altered the prophecy from the books to make the Dragon's gender more ambiguous. Judkins discussed hiding the reveal, saying, "I think not knowing that right from the beginning really will help a new audience lean into these characters, and be picking apart everything about that, and trying to figure out who it might be. Hopefully, it will let the audience really lean into the ensemble nature of the storytelling -- which is very true to The Wheel of Time series as a whole, but not as much so to the first book [which] is a much more singular POV."
The Wheel of Time Season 1 is streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes airing every Friday. Episodes 1-5 are available to stream now.
